Милый друг! Я дал слово ''Эрдмансдёрферу'' оркестровать и прислать ему для его концерта большой антракт к 3-му действию «''Мазепы''» («''Полтавская битва''»), но увы, принявшись за инструментовку, я разочаровался в этой вещи, хочу совсем переделать и покамест отложил её в сторону. Мне очень совестно перед ним, и я написал извинительное письмо, в коем предложил ему вместо этого исполнить ''танцы из 1-го действия''. Итак, если он пожелает, предупреждаю, что я ничего не имею против того, чтобы вещь эта была исполнена, и разрешаю дать ему партитуру для расписания на голоса. Танцы эти не составляют отдельного номера, а суть лишь часть не помню какого №, озаглавленного «''Хор и пляска''». Там, где хор прекращается, начинает играть один оркестр: — это и есть пляска.

Сейчас посылаю к Ратеру потребные бумаги.
