Отвечу тебе на все коротко и ясно. Марш уже пишу и надеюсь дней через 10 выслать его. Очень мне это не по нутру, ибо вообще не расположен к сочинению, а тем более когда меня отрывают этим от моей бесконечно длящейся оперы. Денег не могу принять, — так и скажи, что берусь написать, — но даром. Даже и с тебя не возьму 100 р[ублей] все по той же причине. Кстати раз навсегда скажу тебе эту причину, но знай что, кроме тебя и меня да ещё двух лиц, никто этого не знает, и я не хочу чтобы знали. 2 года тому назад, погрязши в долги до такой степени, что не видел исхода, ибо бюджетные деньги были забраны чуть не за целый год, и других доходов, за исключением звезды Бортнянского, едва блиставшей на дальнем горизонте, — не предвиделось, я с горя напился однажды пьян коньяком в деревне, ночью, у себя в комнате, и в пьяном виде написал письмо к ''государю'', прося его велеть выдать мне 3000 р[ублей] из казны с тем, чтобы долг погашался из поспектакльной платы. Когда на другой день я проснулся, то, разумеется, хотел разорвать письмо, но оно уже лакеем было сдано на почту.
