You asked me then to make <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">this </del>alterations. Some of them were petty, but not unfounded, and so I did them. As for the others, I wrote an explanation for the censor, which I brought to you (and if you remember, I also found Rimsky-Korsakov there), and I gave you my written rebuttal to the pedantic old man. What happened to this explanation? Either you mislaid it and didn't send it to the censor, or the latter is so stubborn and foolish that there's no dealing with him. The funny thing is that I didn't compose the music to the text of the vigil, but I copied it from a book published by the Synod. I harmonised every chant just as it was written in the book, and the words I don't have are not even present in the Synod's music book. Since the omissions indicated by the censor are in a specific number which contains nothing of mine, then I do not and cannot fulfil his demand to insert words for which there is no original chant in this instance. Furthermore, the censor declares here that he is unaware of the orders of service. The kathisma "Blessed is the Man" is from the psalm of David. It is never sung in its entirety anywhere, let alone with this in one place and that in another. Wherever the Kiev chant has been adopted, let them sing 3 couplets, and where it's the Znamensky, the 4: for the most part only the first two verses are sung in our time. I recall that there was another amendment which demonstrated his musical ignorance, i.e. he imagined that no words were repeated, because instead of writing it out three times, I used an abbreviation

In the middle of August, while I was in Moscow, I already had in my hands the manuscript of the All-Night Vigil, with the censor's alterations.

You asked me then to make this alterations. Some of them were petty, but not unfounded, and so I did them. If you want to acquiesce to him, then by all means do so — but let someone else change and add to it as they see fit, because I don't want to.

Bortnyansky's new pieces will have to be arranged, but I must postpone this, because by God I don't have a free moment because of the march and the cantata.
