Завтра, 29, я высылаю тебе большою скоростью следующие части «''Мазепы''».

1) Переделку конца 7-го и начала 8 № I акта, одним словом то место, где я разделил этот первый ''акт'' на 2 картины. Перемена небольшая, всего несколько тактов иначе сделано. Перемены эти нужно перенести в ''клавираус[цуг]'', и для этой цели я написал особый листик, который вложен в приклейку, сделанную на партитуре.

2) Либретто оперы «''Мазепы''» в том виде, как оно должно быть, напечатано.

3) Весь 2-ой акт, разделённый на три картины. Переложение для фортепьяно написано в самой партитуре внизу. На для 3-ей картины места не оказалось и оно, т. е. переложение, сделано отдельно, причём ''голосовые'' партии не вписаны, а лишь место для них оставлено. Таким образом, теперь вся моя опера «Мазепа» ''кончена'', и вся находится у тебя. Два года я над ней сидел, и много трудов она мне стоила. Дальнейшую судьбу её поручаю тебе.

Деньги ещё не получил, но чиновник из банка уже приходил и завтра придёт ещё раз, ибо сегодня не застал меня. Ничего, кроме ''спасибо'', не скажу. Ужасно совестно перед тобой; очень понимаю, что 2000 р[ублей] почти разом выложить не так-то легко. Но одно знай: ''ей Богу не виноват, ей Богу страшная крайность''.

Я жертва рока, против коего ничего не сделаешь. Надеюсь числа 6 или 7-го, наконец, уехать отсюда.
