The necessity for me to leave [[Moscow]] on 31st May prevented me from thanking you for your efforts and flattering attention to my cantata <ref name="note1"/>. This has discomfited me, and I am hastening to write these lines, in order to ask you to be assured of my sincere gratitude. I listened to the cantata from below, without going up, for fear of becoming an object of general curiosity. If you happen to speak with the Grand Duke <ref name="note2"/> (who, it is said, wished to see me), then kindly convey to him my great sorrow at having been deprived of the honour of being introduced to him — this is an honour I had never expected.

I wish you every success and good fortune. Give my best regards to your wife, and be assured of my deepest respect.
