	I wrote to your father with those few details about the last ~~times~~ of your brother's life, as they were known to me, and which he probably told you about. However, I can briefly tell you that ''[[Iosif Kotek\|Osip]]'' fell ill with pneumonia last spring, and he was sent to convalesce at the ''Reichengall'' in the Tyrol; then after falling ill again he was advised to spend the winter at ''[[Davos]]'' in Switzerland, in the mountains. I visited him there in early November. He suffered daily from a fever and coughing, but he was quite cheerful, took walks with me, and had a good appetite and sleep. I spent a week with him there and left, hoping that he would make a complete recovery. After that I still had a few very cheerful and animated letters from him, but having arrived in [[Moscow]] in the middle of December, I received the news that he had been stricken by a new inflammation, and shortly afterwards a telegram brought the news of his death. Я написал Вашему батюшке те немногие подробности о последнем времени жизни Вашего брата, которые мне были известны и, вероятно, он сообщил их Вам. Впрочем, могу вкратце сказать Вам, что ''Осип'' прошлой весной заболел воспалением в лёгких, был по выздоровлении отправлен в ''Рейхенгалль'' в Тироль, там снова заболел и ему посоветовали на зиму поселиться в ''Давосе'' в Швейцарии, в горах. Я навестил его в этой местности в начале ноября. Он страдал ежедневной лихорадкой, кашлем, но был довольно бодр, делал со мной прогулки, имел хороший аппетит и сон. Я провёл там неделю и уехал, надеясь вполне, что он выздоровеет. После того я ещё имел от него несколько писем очень весёлых и бодрых, но приехавши в Москву в половине декабря, получил известие, что его сразило новое воспаление, а вскоре после того пришла телеграмма о его смерти.

На днях я получил письмо от живущей в ''Давосе'' русской дамы г[оспо]жи ''Гулак-Артемовской'', которая ежедневно посещала больного. Письмо это посылаю сегодня Вашему батюшке и попрошу его переслать его Вам. Я принимаю живейшее участие в Вашей горести, и для меня смерть Вашего брата есть такая незаменимая утрата, что я никогда не примирюсь с ней.
