	I was very glad to receive news from you, golubushka [[Anya]]! You describe the beauty of the raging sea so vividly that I became envious. They laugh at me when I say that I love bad weather, but just imagine that it's true! A grey sky with wispy clouds, a grey sea with white foamy waves — what could be more beautiful than this? But you need the house to be warm and cosy, yet you complain about it; this is bad indeed! I've just returned to [[Maydanovo]] after a three-week absence. I sat for three whole weeks over the examinations at the ~~conservatory~~, found out its true situation and requirements, and accomplished a whole revolution: namely, elevating [[Taneyev]] to become the ~~conservatory~~ director. It cost me a great deal of trouble and effort. As a result I was afflicted by inexpressible fatigue, from which I barely recovered, set about my work, and entered the limits of normal life. ''Novichikha'' (as we call the owner) was initially very intrusive in trespassing on our intimacy, but now, fortunately for us, she's become very close with the other summer residents, and rarely appears; but oh, those summer residents! They spoil all my pleasure. When I rented [[Maydanovo]], I didn't know that there were more dachas here, otherwise, of course, I wouldn't have rented it. The whole point is that I want to be the complete master of the place where I live. Now I'm looking for a modest estate, without any sort of dachas! I suspect that you want to give your embroidery to someone else, and you are so eloquently persuading them to have an excuse to be rid of me. How can I find this lovely work ''unfit''? No! I repeat one hundred thousand times: it is wonderful, excellent, magnificent, ideal!!! All those whom you want to make happy to my detriment — let them wait. I'm now writing a symphony as a form of relaxation, so that in the winter I can indulge in an opera with the greatest of pleasure. Очень рад был получить от тебя известие, голубушка Аня! Ты так живо описываешь красоту бушующего моря, что мне завидно стало. Надо мной смеются, когда я говорю, что люблю дурную погоду, а ведь представь, что это правда! Серое небо с клочковатыми облаками, серые с белой пеной морские волны, — да что может быть красивее этого? Но нужно, чтобы дома при этом было тепло и уютно, а ты на дом жалуешься; вот это уж плохо! Я только что вернулся в Майданово после трёхнедельного отсутствия. У нас здесь очень оживлённо. Кроме семейства Толиного живёт Модя (тоже с семейством, ибо он пишет повесть и увлечён своими действующими лицами) а также рядом с нами живёт твой приятель Н. Д. Кондратьев. Погода очень неблагоприятна; все сердятся и злятся, — но в качестве любителя дурной погоды, я очень терпелив. Только вот для маленькой Тани, которая начала было укрепляться и здороветь, тоже жажду солнца. ''Новичиха'' (так мы называем хозяйку) сначала было очень назойливо лезла в интимность, но теперь, на наше счастье, очень сошлась с другими дачниками и редко появляется; но зато ох уж эти дачники! они отравляют мне все удовольствие. Нанимая Майданово, я не знал, что здесь есть ещё дачи, а то, конечно бы, не нанял. Вся суть в том, что я хочу быть полным хозяином места, в коем живу. Ищу теперь небольшой усадьбы без всяких дач! Я подозреваю, что тебе хочется твоё вышивание отдать кому-нибудь другому, и так красноречиво уговариваешь его, чтобы иметь предлог отделаться от меня. Как я могу найти эту прелестную работу ''негодной''! Нет! сто тысяч раз повторяю: чудно, превосходно, великолепно, идеально!!! Пусть подождут те, которых ты хочешь, в ущерб мне, осчастливить. Пишу теперь в виде отдохновения симфонию, чтобы с большим удовольствием предаться зимой опере. Целую твои ручки и прошу не забывать и давать знать о себе. Петру Ивановичу, Любовь Петровне и её мужу поклон.
