	I have set about a new opera, and the work is going quite successfully. I am very pleased with the subject ("[[The Enchantress]]"), and [[Shpazhinsky]] has managed to adapt his play into an opera libretto for me with remarkable success. I am not at all burdened by the solitude, and my heart even sinks to think about my forthcoming trip to [[Kamenka]]. It is always awfully difficult for me to part ways with a place where I am ensconced. You write that you have winter weather, and we had this for three days, but today is a thoroughly summer-like, warm day. Although I have horses, I do not use them at all, and the one who rides them the most is that profound philosopher and retired soldier known to you, [[Aleksey Sofronov\|Aleksey Ivanovich Sofronov]]. However, I do not regret making this purchase, because it is still very nice to know that you always have a galloping pair of chestnuts to hand. Я и не думал сердиться и сетовать на то, что ты до сих пор не писал. Я знаю, как ты занят, и не имею ни малейшей претензии, чтобы ты мне часто писал. Однако ж, когда от тебя приходит писание, я всегда бываю до крайности рад! Спасибо тебе, мой дружок!

У меня здесь все благополучно, тихо и мирно. Устроился я необыкновенно хорошо, изящно, удобно, комфортабельно. Мне бы очень хотелось, чтобы ты увидел, как я живу. Может быть, удастся тебе как-нибудь зимой на денёк приехать, — вот хорошо бы в самом деле было! Что если бы Модя, ты и Боб, напр[имер], в конце рождественских праздников приехали? Я бы до крайности радовался.

Принялся я за новую оперу, и работа идёт довольно удачно. Сюжетом («Чародейка») я очень доволен, и Шпажинский необыкновенно удачно переделал для меня свою пиэсу в оперное либретто. Одиночеством покамест я ещё совсем не тягощусь и даже с сжиманием сердца помышляю о предстоящей в скором времени поездке в Каменку. Мне всегда бывает ужасно трудно расставаться с насиженным местом. Ты пишешь, что у вас зима, и у нас она дня три стояла, но сегодня совершенно летний, чудный, тёплый день. Имея лошадей, я ими, однако, совсем не пользуюсь, а больше на них катается известный тебе глубокомысленный философ из отставных солдат Алексей Иванович Софронов. Однако ж не раскаиваюсь, что сделал эту покупку, ибо всё-таки очень приятно знать, что под рукой всегда имеется быстроногая рыжая пара.

Скажи ''Бобику'', что я его крепко целую и обнимаю и прошу не стеснять себя как бы обязанностью писать мне. Когда будет совсем здоров и свободен, пусть пишет, — если же голова все будет болеть, пусть не насилует себя.

В это воскресенье, у меня был только один гость: ''Коля Переслени'', уезжающий на днях на Кавказ. Я еду через три дня в Москву и Каменку. Целую крепко.
