Ученик Училища живописи и ваяния (фамилии коего я не знаю) принёс мне сегодня портрет мой, сделанный с карточки. Если не ошибаюсь, портрет этот сделан очень талантливо, хотя художник, кажется, сделал меня гораздо красивее, чем я есть в действительности. Как бы то ни было, — но я купил этот портрет за 30 р[ублей] сер[ебром]. Не знаю, дожил ли я до чести висеть на одной из Консерваторских стен. Если дожил, то дарю этот портрет Консерватории. Если нет, то дарю его Вам или Варваре Павловне. Одним словом, распоряжайтесь им по Вашему усмотрению.<br />

A student at the School of Painting and Sculpture (whose surname I don't know) brought me a portrait of me today, fashioned from a photograph. If I'm not mistaken, this portrait was done with great talent, although the artist appears to have made me much more handsome than I really am. Be that as it may, I bought this portrait for 30 silver rubles. I don't know whether I'll have the honour to see it hanging on one of the Conservatory's walls. If so, then I give this portrait to the Conservatory. If not, then I give it to you or [[Varvara Taneyeva|Varvara Pavlovna]]. In short, dispose of it at your discretion <ref name="note1"/>.<br />
