Я сейчас от Ипполитова-Иванова, у которого видел присланную тобой 1-ую мою симфонию. Не помню, чтобы я когда нибудь так злился на твою рассеянность и на царствующий в твоих делах беспорядок, как сегодня. Ведь хорошо, что я пока жив и могу поправить и разъяснить такую невероятную путаницу, как то, что произошло с моей 1-ой симфонией. А что если бы я, чего боже сохрани, скончаюсь? ... В самом деле, я так сегодня огорчился, что чуть не умер от гнева и волнения.

Приходится рассказать всю историю моей многострадальной 1-oй симфонии.

Она была написана в 1866 г. По совету Ник[олая] Григ[орьевича], до исполнения, я в ней сделал некоторые перемены, и в этом виде она была исполнена в 1868 г[оду]. Но тогда же я решился подвергнуть её коренной переделке. Однако ж привёл в исполнение это желание не ранее как в 1874 г[оду]. В 1875 г[оду] в день моего рождения, ты в виде сюрприза поднёс мне напечатанную партитуру. Я был тронут твоим вниманием, но весьма недоволен бесчисленными ошибками, обезобразившими издание. Но ошибки ошибками, а напечатана была симфония как следует, т. е. с теми переменами, какие я сделал в 1874 г[оду]. Затем её не играли до 1883 г[оду]. Перед исполнением Альбрехт прислал мне партитуру в Каменку. Я отметил множество ошибок, а Эрдмансдёрфер при репетициях нашёл их ещё очень много; но исполнено все было как следует. Тогда же ты задумал издать вновь фортепианное переложение симфонии и поручил Лангеру исправить что было скверного. Он с помощью Кашкина сделал это и мне дал на просмотр (во время репетиций к «Мазепе», т. е. в конце 83 и начале 84 года).

''Засим всё это: т. е. и партитура с поправками моими и Эрдмансдёрфера, и голоса, выверенные на репетициях, и фортепьянное переложение, — всё это кануло куда-то в воду''. Нынче, около месяца тому назад, ты меня спрашивал, где перемены, которые я сделал в 1-ой симфонии? Я тебе объяснил, что перемен никаких нету и что партитура напечатана в 1875 г[оду] с ''переменами'', а есть только поправки опечаток мои и ''Эрдмансдёрфера''. Что же я вижу теперь? Ты присылаешь Иванову 1-ую симфонию с вклеенными в неё местами, которые я уничтожил при коренной переделке в 1874 r[оду]. Т. е. всю ту гадость, к[ото]рую я выбросил, ты теперь тщательно возобновляешь. И откуда ты взял эти выброшенные места? И кто это постарался мне насолить? И почему голоса ты послал какие-то неподходящие вовсе к симфонии в её настоящей редакции и также, что они не согласны ни с первоначальным видом симфонии, ни с последующим...

Итак, для того чтобы вполне было ясно положение дела относительно многострадальной симфонии, повторяю.

1) ''Партитура'' представляет собой симфонию в том виде, как должно быть, но только в ней бесчисленное количество ошибок.

2) Должны быть голоса выверенные, т.е., по коим Эрдмансдёрфер исполнял симфонию в 1883 г[оду]. Где они находятся, мне неизвестно, но, очевидно, это не те, которые ты теперь прислал Иванову.

3) Переложение сделано скверно и напечатано с тьмой грубейших ошибок. Все это было переделано и исправлено в 1883 и 84 годах, и где исправленный экземпляр находится, мне тоже неизвестно.

4) Писанные листки, которые вложены в экземпляр, посланный Иванову, ''суть те безобразия'', которые я выкинул в 1874 при переделке, и как и почему ты их восстановил, мне совершенно непонятно. As a matter of fact, I was so upset today that I almost died from anger and confusion.

I must recount the whole story of my long-suffering [[Symphony No. 1|1st symphony]].

It was written in 1866. On [[Nikolay Grigoryevich]]'s advice I made some changes to it before the performance, and it was performed in this form in 1868. But then I decided to subject it to a fundamental revision. However, I didn't carry out this intention until 1874. In 1875, on my birthday, you presented me with a printed copy of the score as a surprise. I was touched by your thoughtfulness, but was most dissatisfied with the numerous errors which spoiled the edition. But mistakes aside, the symphony was printed correctly, i.e. with the changes that I made in 1874. Then it wasn't played until 1883. Before the performance, [[Albrecht]] sent the score to me at [[Kamenka]]. I noted many mistakes, and during rehearsals [[Erdmannsdörfer]] found many more, but everything was performed correctly. Then you thought to publish a new piano arrangement of the symphony, and commissioned [[Langer]] to fix the blunders. He did this with [[Kashkin]]'s help, and showed it to me (during rehearsals for ''[[Mazepa]]'', i.e. at the end of '83 and beginning of '84).

''What's become of all this: i.e. the full score with [[Erdmannsdörfer]]'s and my corrections, and the parts, checked at rehearsals, and the piano arrangement — has it sunk into the waters?''. Now, around a month ago, you asked me for the alterations which I'd made to the [[Symphony No. 1|1st symphony]]. I explained to you that there was nothing to be altered, and that the score had been printed in 1875 with the ''alterations'', but there were only corrections of printing errors by myself and ''[[Erdmannsdörfer]]''. Now what do I see? You've sent [[Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov|Ivanov]] the [[Symphony No. 1|1st symphony]] with the passages stuck into it that I destroyed during my fundamental reworking; i.e. all the abominations I threw out, you have now painstakingly restored. And where did these discarded passages come from? Who's trying to annoy me?
