The spring, the nature of the South, the mountains, so many nice and agreeable people, the pleasure of doing nothing, in which I indulged endlessly there — in short, a whole series of reasons and conditions which congenially contributed to my complete well being. And, of course, you will not take it as an empty phrase and a banal compliment if I say that you and the most agreeable [[Varvara Mikhaylovna]] contributed so much to the fact that I remember [[Tiflis]] with particular pleasure. 			''There is a Conservatory in [[Geneva]]'', but, so far as I remember, not in our sense, but rather in the sense of an institution where amateurs go to take lessons for a modest fee. I know that three of my nieces, when they were girls and being educated in [[Geneva]], went to ''take lessons'' at the Conservatory — but I do not know anyone there personally, and cannot recommend anyone. [[Geneva]] is a very minor musical city, and it seems there are no outstanding artists there. But it is better to approach the ''[[Geneva]] priest'', Father ''Petrov'', who has lived in ''[[Geneva]]'' for many years, and who will certainly be able to ''indicate'' who the best teachers are there.

Очень обрадован был получением письма Вашего. На меня так и нахлынули, читая его. Тифлисские воспоминания. Месяц, проведённый мной в Тифлисе, принадлежит к числу самых радостно-светлых воспоминаний моей жизни. Так как-то благоприятно сложились обстоятельства, — что ни единого облачка не было на моем небе за весь этот месяц. Весна, южная природа, горы, много милых и симпатичных людей, наслаждение ничего неделания, которому я там безгранично предавался, — одним словом, целый ряд причин и условий, дружественно содействовавших моему полнейшему благополучию. И, конечно, Вы не примете за пустую фразу и банальный комплимент, если я скажу, что Вы и симпатичнейшая Варвара Михайловна много содействовали тому, что я вспоминаю. о Тифлисе с особенным удовольствием.

Есть, впрочем, одно, что заставляет болезненно сжиматься моё сердце, когда я вспоминаю Тифлис. Это до сих пор не разъяснившаяся для меня катастрофа с ''Вериновским''. Ни Прасковья Владимировна, ни брат, ни Переслени ни слова мне об нем не писали, вероятно для того, чтобы не расстроить и не огорчать меня. Из Парижа, где от своего слуги, получившего письмо от Степана (слуги брата), я узнал о случившемся и был огорчён до слез, — я писал в Тифлис и про сил подтверждения и подробностей, — но никто и ничего мне до сих пор не отвечает. Иногда я льщу себя надеждой, что, может быть, я не так прочёл в письме Степана; может быть, это неправда... Думаю, однако ж, что наконец из писем брата и жены его узнаю что-нибудь верное...
Очень, очень рад, что Вам хорошо живётся в деревне и что «''Руфь''» подвигается. Нечего и говорить, что я буду чрезвычайно рад и чрезвычайно благодарен, если Вы пришлёте мне клавираусцуг, а тем более партитуру Вашей оперы, о ко торой, судя по отрывкам, имею самое высокое мнение. Не сомневаюсь ни минуты в том, что по музыке эта опера будет чрезвычайно удачна, поэтична и трогательна, — но сделайте, пожалуйста, все возможное, чтобы в сценическом отношении она была по возможности интересна и занимательна. Сценичность я понимаю совсем не в смысле нагромождения эффектов, — а в том, чтобы происходящее на сцене трогало и вызывало бы сердечное участие зрителя. Библейская идиллия, выбранная Вами сюжетом, имеет бездну прелести. Но этого недостаточно; нужно, чтобы не было растянутости; чтобы интерес действия не охлаждался, чтобы разделение на сцены и действия было сделано обдуманно. Я долго воображал, что много о ''сценичности'' думать нечего и что музыка своё возьмёт, несмотря на все недостатки либретто. Теперь опыт научил меня, что для успеха и прочности судьбы оперы необходимо как можно обдуманнее относиться к подробностям сцены.

Про себя скажу Вам, что я, подобно Вам, радуюсь своему нахождению в деревне, — но работаю пока ещё не особенно прилежно. Однако, надеюсь, как и Вы, к осени кончить оперу вчерне и зимой заняться инструментовкой. Путешествие моё было очень приятно, и 12 дней, проведённых на пароходе, останутся тоже одним из· приятнейших воспоминаний моей жизни, благодаря в особенности тому обстоятельству, что погода все время была великолепная. В Париже я прожил ''месяц'' и очень устал от с у е ты парижской. Но сохранил о некоторых людях. с коими сталкивался, приятное воспоминание.

Попаду ли в Тифлис осенью или зимой, об этом покамест ничего решительного сказать ещё не могу. Очень, очень, очень бы хотелось, и надеюсь, что оно так и будет. Если же ни осенью, ни зимой нельзя будет, — то весной, быть может, приеду. Лишь бы только пожить да здоровым быть, — а что меня тянет в Тифлис сильно и что я там так или иначе побываю, — это не подлежит сомнению.

''В Женеве есть Консерватория'', и, сколько помнится, не в нашем смысле, а в смысле заведения, где за небольшую плату любители ходят брать уроки. Знаю, что три моих племянницы, будучи девочками и воспитываясь в Женеве, ходили ''брать уроки'' в Консерваторию, — но лично я ни с кем там не знаком и никого рекомендовать не могу. Женева город очень мало музыкальный, и, кажется, никаких выдающихся артистов там нет. Но лучше всего обратиться к ''Женевскому священнику'', отцу ''Петрову'', который много лет живёт в ''Женеве'' и, конечно, сумеет ''указать'', кто там лучшие учителя.

Целую ручку добрейшей Варваре Михайловне, которой желаю всевозможного благополучия. Вас от души обнимаю, добрейший Михаил Михайлович, и прошу Вас верить в чувства моей искреннейшей дружбы. Поклон приятельнице Варвары Михайловны, жительствующей у Вас.
