No, joking aside — I am very distressed about your poverty, and have been trying in vain to work out how to find you new resources. [[Modest]] has probably told you that I had a wonderful journey. After [[Tiflis]] I accomplished a ten-day voyage at sea, without having any sea evil, on the deck of a French ship. I must tell you, [[Anya]], that I did not spend the summer particularly well, because I was frequently out of sorts. Since this is the fourth summer I have spent in the north of Russia, and been constantly unwell the entire summer, I conclude from this that our winter is beneficial for my health, but our summer is not. Consequently, I have dreams of spending next summer in [[Borzhom]]. [[Parasha]] lived there during the summer months, and was absolutely delighted. I have still been working well. I finished the rough sketches of the opera, which I shall orchestrate during the winter. Furthermore, I have written [[Twelve Romances, Op. 60\|12 romances]]. [[Maydanovo]] is less and less suitable for me, and I am starting to seriously consider looking elsewhere for my permanent residence. There are no woods, the summer residents are blighting life there, and ''Novichikha'' is not endearing herself to me. Голубушка Аня! Я чрезвычайно был обрадован твоим письмом, ибо начинал беспокоиться о тебе. Хотел несколько раз тебе написать, да не знал или, лучше сказать, забыл, как адресовать в ''Орро''. Радуюсь, что ты здорова, но весьма, весьма сокрушаюсь отчаянному положению ваших финансов.

Во-1-х, «''без кушать нельзя живать''» и по моему расчёту все 2000 ваши должны уйти на «кушать». А остальное? Ума не приложу. Положим, что можно вовсе не одеваться и всем вам ходить дома как Бог создал. Но тогда ведь необходимо вдвойне топить, — опять расход. Нет, шутки в сторону, — я очень сокрушаюсь о вашей бедности и тщетно стараюсь придумать, как бы вам отыскать новые ресурсы. Впрочем, обо всем этом поговорим при свидании, которое будет иметь место в конце сентября. Как только я буду приехавши, я возвращу себя к тебе и, вероятнее всего, приду брать у тебя в 3 часа чай. Модест, вероятно, имел тебе сказать, что я имел сделать чудесное путешествие. После Тифлиса я сделал десятидневный морской переезд, без иметь имев морское зло, на краю французского парохода. Провёл 3 дня в Марселе и месяц в Париже. В Париже я вёл чёртов поезд... Однако довольно вздор болтать. Скажу тебе, Аня, что лето это я не особенно хорошо провёл, ибо очень часто недомогал. Так как вот уже 4-е лето я провожу на севере России и всегда целое лето нездоров, то из этого я заключаю, что наша зима благоприятна для моего здоровья, а лето нет. Вследствие этого мечтаю будущее лето провести в Боржоме. Параша проживала там летние месяцы и в совершенном восторге. Работал же я хорошо. Кончил черновые эскизы оперы, которую в течение зимы буду оркестровать. Кроме того, написал 12 романсов. Майданово все менее и менее удовлетворяет меня, и я начинаю серьёзно подумывать об отыскании себе другого места для постоянного пребывания. Лесу нет, дачники отравляют жизнь, да и сама ''Новичиха'' очень мне не по сердцу.

Меня весьма обрадовало сообщаемое тобой известие об успехе Александры Валерьяновны. Но как не злиться на неё при мысли, что лучшее своё время она без пользы и без удовольствия прожила вдали от сцены, для которой рождена! Знаешь ли ты, что Модест написал новую комедию. По-моему, очень замечательная вещь, и я желал бы, чтобы он тебе прочёл её. Ну до свидания, голубушка. Само собой разумеется, что я тебя повезу во французский театр и куда только тебе захочется с величайшей радостью. Недели через две, не позже, увидимся.
