Два месяца тому назад я счёл своим долгом обратить Ваше внимание на грустное положение, в котором находится Московская опера, и на будущность, ей угрожающую. Мною руководили с одной стороны, любовь к русскому искусству, а с другой, глубокая вера в просвещённое и патриотическое отношение Ваше к этому предмету, столь знаменательно выразившееся в образцовой переорганизации наших театров в обеих столицах. Те же чувства заставляют меня ещё раз беспокоить Ваше сиятельство в настоящую минуту перед закрытием сезона, когда угрожавшее будущее накануне осуществления: ''здешнее театральное управление распускает лучшие, незаменимые элементы московской труппы'' так, что в будущем сезоне безусловно невозможно будет располагать даже посредственным ансамблем для исполнения серьёзного репертуара. Питаю надежду, что Вы примете во внимание мою убедительнейшую просьбу и предохраните московскую оперу от неминуемого падения, которое несомненно, если властная рука Ваша не защитит её.
