	As a consequence of moving to a new apartment and the associated disarray, I lost your last letter and I don't remember what I'm supposed to answer. You seemed to be asking about "''[[The Oprichnik]]''" in [[Moscow]]? The director, whom I saw the other day, said that he had commissioned a copy of the score. But, to tell the truth, you cannot rely on the local directorate, and judging from the fact that neither Kavelin, nor [[Begichev]] tell me anything, I tend to think that they have cooed towards the idea of staging my opera. If this is so, then it's hardly worth grieving over. The opera here has declined so badly that they cannot perform anything decently, and "''[[The Oprichnik]]''" will be distorted in the most unacceptable fashion. I know this from "''[[The Snow Maiden]]''", which has been rehearsed countless times, and all the same things are going badly. I've received the symphony; it is splendidly printed — but there are many mistakes; it's a pity that you were in a hurry. I've completely finished the six piano pieces for you; now I'm busy copying them out, and you will be receiving them in the very near future. All six pieces are written on the same theme and will carry the general title ''Suite''. Nos. 1) Prelude, 2) Fugue, 3) Impromptu, 4) Mazurka, 5) Marche funebre, 6) Scherzo. The thing is ~~dedicate~~ to [[Anton Rubinstein\|A. G. Rubinstein]]. Вследствие переезда на новую квартиру и сопряженных с этим передряг, я потерял твоё последнее письмо и не помню, но что должен отвечать. Ты, кажется, спрашиваешь насчёт «''Опричника''» в Москве? Режиссёр, которого я на днях видел, сообщил мне, что переписка партитуры им заказана. Но, по правде говоря, на здешнюю дирекцию полагаться очень нельзя, и судя по тому, что ни Кавелин. ни Бегичев ничего мне не говорят, я склонен думать, что они охладели к мысли поставить мою оперу. Если это так, то едва ли следует сокрушаться. Опера здесь до того упала, что ничего порядочно исполнить не могут, и «''Опричник''» будет искажён самым не позволительным образом. Я это знаю по «''Снегурочке''», которую репетировали несчётное число раз, и всё-таки дела идёт плохо. Получил симфонию; она напечатана отлично, — но опечаток немало, жаль, что ты поторопился.
