Ты, вероятно, очень удивился, душа моя, что я просил вчера купить мне детскую колясочку! У меня, или, лучше сказать, у Алексея, гостит жена камердинера покойного Кондратьева. Она очень слабенькая и больная, у ребёнка английская болезнь, ходить он не может, и несчастная мать измучилась, не спуская его с рук своих. Я не могу видеть это измученное лицо и решился приобресть колясочку, чтобы бедного малютку можно было не таскать на руках, а возить. Вот тебе и объяснение.

Теперь насчёт ''Улыбышева''. Я вчера посвятил два вечерних часа началу перевода и сделал всего 4 страницы. Так как страниц гораздо более тысячи и так как далеко не каждый день я могу уделять время для перевода, то я рассчитал, что нужно будет года три, чтобы сделать все, да и то при условии отнимать время от сочинения, чего мне страх как не хочется. На этом основании я предложил находившемуся вчера здесь и уже уехавшему на Кавказ Модесту взять этот перевод на себя и посвятить ему все своё время, ибо книга в самом деле замечательна, и не даром ''Marx'' называет автора «''der vortreffliche Oulibischeff''. Модест с большой охотой взял на себя этот труд; в литературном отношении он сделает уж наверное не хуже меня, а что касается специально музыкальной стороны, то я про редактирую перевод и ты напечатаешь: «''перевод М. и П. Чайковских''». Кроме того, я напишу предисловие. Согласен ли ты на это? Если да, то письменно поощри Модеста. Конечно, ты должен ему (или нам) заплатить. Сочинение огромное; издержки на перевод и на издание будут очень большие. Сообрази все это, и, быть может, ты откажешься от намерения издавать? В таком случае тоже немедленно сообщи Модесту. Адрес его: ''Кавказ, Боржом, до востребования''. Книга Улыбышева прекрасная, но есть ли тебе выгода печатать, и можешь ли ты рассчитывать на большой сбыт? И мне ответь на все это два словечка.
