Толинька, голубчик, не сердись, что я ограничиваюсь коротенькими письмецами. Я так устаю от работы, что решительно не могу длинных писем писать. Мне ведь необходимо в течение лета кончить симфонию, увертюру к «Гамлету» и ещё инструментовать увертюру ''Лароша''. Это я ему давно обещал. Ларош с женой гостят теперь у меня; их положение ужасно. ''Плевако'' совершенно опутал их, и у них ни денег, ни надежды выпутаться нет. Впрочем, не унывают. Погода стояла дней десять дивная, и я страшно наслаждался; теперь опять дождь нескончаемый. Мечтаю о поездке к Вам осенью. Жду Модеста с Колей. Вообще все слава Богу обстоит благополучно. В доме у меня перемена: ушёл повар ''Василий'' (сам захотел уйти), и взят новый, коим я очень доволен.<br />

[[Tolichka]], golubchik, don't be angry that I'm restricting myself to brief notes. I'm so tired from work that I absolutely cannot write long letters. After all, this summer I need to finish the symphony <ref name="note1"/>, the overture to ''[[Hamlet (overture-fantasia)|Hamlet]]'', and also to orchestrate ''[[Laroche]]'s'' overture. I've been promising him that for ages. [[Laroche]] and his wife are currently my guests; their situation is awful. ''Plevako'' <ref name="note2"/> has tied them up in knots, they have no money, nor any hope of extricating themselves. Still, they are bearing up. The weather this last ten days was glorious, and I enjoyed it terribly; now it's raining incessantly again. I'm dreaming of coming to see you in the autumn. I'm waiting for [[Modest]] and [[Kolya]]. In general all is well with them, thank God. I have made one change at home: ''Vasily'' the cook has left (at his own request), and I've taken on a new one, with whom I'm very pleased.<br />
