	Golubchik [[Modya]]! I stayed in [[Hannover]] for 3 days; on the day of my departure I fell ill and accomplished the journey in the most awful fashion, in cramped conditions, with terrible toothache, fever, delirium, etc. I arrived in [[Paris]] on the morning of the 3rd, thoroughly ill. I viewed the streets of [[Paris]], hitherto so dear to me, with such revulsion. On arriving, I went to bed and lay there all day. Naturally the Beliards and [[Brandukov]], afforded me all manner of care and sympathy. Yesterday, thanks to a ~~laxative~~, I was already feeling better, and today I'm better still, with only the swelling in my cheek remaining. So far I've visited no-one besides ''[[Mackar]]''. I began to experience some enjoyment from [[Paris]], but this was precisely when the invitations started. The Beliards haven't changed particularly; only ''Mademoiselle Marie'' has notably aged. They all just talk about [[Tanya]], [[Vera]] and [[Georges]], showing their most sincere love for all of us in general, and when old ''Maria'' brings the lamp, she talks about them for ages with tears in her eyes. The Beliards' hotel is completely empty; they say the theatres are empty, and everyone in general is complaining about poor business. There didn't seem to me to be much activity on the boulevards either. The painful melancholy that pursued me everywhere in Germany has completely passed here, but I have a presentiment that as soon as I go to see [[Marie de Benardaky\|Benardaky]], ''[[Colonne]]'' and the like, another sort of torment will begin — being tired of company. But, thank God, all this won't last for long, however. For God's sake write something to me about [[Tolya]] and the Caucuses in general; I've had no information about them, and I'm starting to worry.
