Out of the [[Petersburg]] newspapers, I would have agreed to it being printed in the "Petersburg Gazette", but this is awkward because it touches on ''[[Cui]]''. For God's sake explain why, if Krayevsky is afraid of Makarov's protests against my article, wasn't he in the least embarrassed to print it in your version? After all, Makarov will protest against you too. I think it's something else altogether. Probably either ''Makarov'' is a good friend of Krayevsky, or your assurance that these gentlemen are delighted with my article is a lie, and on the contrary, they find it indecent, poorly written, etc. This is a pity, because the ''statistics'' at the end of the column are most interesting. Я нахожу совершенно неудобным, чтоб статья, написанная мною с такой любовью и охотой, статья, в которую к влил столько неподдельного юмора, остроумия, ума, эрудиции и т. п. прелестей, появилась без моей подписи. Нет, без шуток, она утратит весь свой смысл, если не будет подписана мною. Я отвечал Бильбасову отрицательно на его предложение отдать статью в горнило твоего вдохновения. Затем убедительно прошу тебя немедленно прислать мне статью, ибо я, хоть это и жаль, отдам её в «Р[усские] в[едомости]». Из петербургских газет я бы согласился напечатать её в «Петерб[ургских] вед[омостях]», но. неловко, потому что я затронул ''Кюи''. Объясни, ради Бога, почему, если Краевский боится возражений Макарова на мою статью, он нисколько не стесняется напечатать её в твоей переработке? Ведь и тебе тоже Макаров будет возражать.
