Дорогая моя Баташа! Хоть я четыре месяца целых не писал Вам, — но, конечно, Вы не можете сомневаться, что это не от недостатка любви к Вам. Сколько раз собирался по душе побеседовать с Вами, но заработался до того, что принуждён был ограничиваться только необходимыми письмами. Смерть хочется повидаться с Вами. Как только все разъедутся из консерватории (Сафонова Вашего видеть я не желаю и оттого носа в консерваторию в мае не покажу), так я нагряну к Вам и буду Вас уговаривать: 1) погостить у меня и 2) вместе съездить к Соф[ье] Ив[ановне], которой я обещал посетить её так же, как и Вы.

Я здесь уже пятый день. Инструментую оперу и делаю корректуры клавираусцуга. Грустно, что ''Феклуши'' уже нет! Грустно, что весь лес вырубили. Но, впрочем, расположение духа отличное вследствие удачного хода сочинения «''Пиковой дамы''». Я очень горжусь этой оперой.

Голубка Баташа! Целую Ваши ручки. Спасибо, что вспомнили меня 25-го.

My dear [[Batasha]]! Even though I haven't written to you in almost four months, be in no doubt that this wasn't from any lack of love for you. There were so many times when I wanted to have heartfelt conversations with you, but work compelled me to restrict myself only to essential letters. I'm dying to see you. As soon as everyone's left the conservatory (I have no wish to see your [[Safonov]] and therefore won't show my nose at the conservatory until May), then I'll be descending on you and persuading you: 1) to come and stay with me, and 2) come with me to call on [[Sofiya Jurgenson|Sofya Ivanovna]], who, like you, I've also been promising to visit.

I've been here for five days. I'm scoring the opera and doing the proofs of the piano reduction. It's so sad that ''Fekushla'' <ref name="note1"/> is no longer with us! So sad that the whole forest has been cut down. But I'm in a splendid mood anyway, due to the way that composition of "''[[The Queen of Spades]]''" went so successfully. I'm very proud of this opera.

Golubka [[Batasha]]! I kiss your hands. Thank you for remembering me on the 25th.
