I say all this not in the form of courtesies in return for everything that I was so pleased to read in your letter. I will say that, without false modesty, it seems to me that your hand was guided by the truth, moreover a truth that I have always realized and been aware of in the depths of my soul, but which no-one has ever expressed privately or in print. Hence this was why it was so particularly pleasant and touching to read your letter. It seems to me that I really am gifted with the quality of ''truthfully, sincerely and simply'' expressing with music those feelings, mods and images that the text suggests. In this sense I am a ''realist'' and fundamentally Russian. As to the artistic value, and the extent of the creative powers bestowed upon me, that is another question. I don't have the slightest pretension to genius. I am merely aware in myself of that quality inherent in my musical nature, which you set forth and served as the reason for your letter. You have shown remarkable sensitivity in expressing your thoughts about me. My God! You say that as an amateur you have no right to speak authoritatively about music. I assure you that a sensitive lover of music judges it infinitely more correctly and truly than avowed musicians. Do you know that for a long time {{und2\|all}} the Russian musical press have {{und2\|unequivocally denounced me as a vocal composer}}, and have stubbornly held to the view that I could progress nowhere beyond the symphony?
