Милый друг! Сейчас едут на почту, и потому отвечаю кратко.

1) Относительно партитуры «''Дамы''» поступи как найдёшь лучше — я тут ничего не смыслю. Но в Христофорова больше верю, чем в Лангера.

2) Прошу тебя убедительно с Альтани не церемониться. Т. е. отвечай ему: ''бери что дают, а не хочешь — как хочешь, черт с тобой''. Т. е. отвечай в этом смысле. Что он, в самом деле, свой паршивый нос стал подымать? Его дело сидеть целое лето и исправлять ошибки в партитуре. Кстати, он может вытребовать на время мою подлинную партитуру из Петербурга. Если Альтани вернёт партитуру, ничего не отвечай, плюнь и жди. Чтоб им всем пусто было, сукиным детям!

3) Музыка к «Гамлету» осталась в Михайловском театре или у Христофорова. Я не прочь, чтобы ты её издал, ибо она многим понравилась, а от марша все в восторге. Но прими во внимание, что туда вошли три старые вещи, а именно: 1) Антракт перед 2 действием (из 3 симфонии); 2) Антракт и интермедия 3-го действия («''Снегурочка''») и 3) Антракт перед 4[-м] действием (Элегия самаринская). Эти три вещи нужно исключить, а при увертюре сделать замечание, что это переделка большого «''Гамлета''» для малого оркестра. Вообще нужно будет снабдить партитуру замечаниями. Вот и все покамест. Завтра вечером на 2 дня еду в Петербург, чтобы видеть пиэсу Модеста. В четверг возвращусь. Обнимаю!

Партитур Танеева ещё не получил. Но я и смотреть не буду, ибо могу ли в нем сомневаться; сейчас же их велю отправить назад.

Dear friend! I'm just going to the post office, and therefore I'm answering briefly.

1) Regarding the score of "''[[The Queen of Spades|The Queen]]''", do whatever you think best — I don't understand anything here. But I have more faith in [[Khristoforov]] than in [[Langer]].

2) I earnestly request you not to stand on ceremony with [[Altani]], i.e. answer him ''take what's being given, but if you don't want it — then as you wish, to hell with you'', or something to this effect. And if he actually turns up his lousy nose at it, then he has to sit the whole summer correcting errors in the score. Or he can borrow my original score from [[Petersburg]] for a while. If [[Altani]] sends the score back, don't respond, just spit and wait. So it was all for nothing, those sons of bitches.

3) The music to ''[[Hamlet (incidental music)|Hamlet]]'' is still at the Mikhaylovsky Theatre or with [[Khristoforov]]. I'm not averse to you publishing it, because it greatly pleased, and everyone is delighted with the march. But bear in mind that it includes three old items, namely: 1) the entr'acte before Act II (from the [[Symphony No. 3|3rd symphony]]); 2) the entr'acte and intermezzo in the 3rd act ("''[[The Snow Maiden]]''") and 3) the entr'acte before the 4th act ([[Samarin]]'s [[Elegy|elegy]]). These three things need to be excluded, and in the overture make a note that this is a reworking of the larger "''[[Hamlet (overture-fantasia)|Hamlet]]''" for small orchestra. Generally it will be necessary to supply notes to the score. That's all for the time being. Tomorrow evening I'm going to [[Petersburg]] for 2 days to see [[Modest]]'s play.
