My dear Nikolasha!
I've just received your letter . It's not possible to explain how glad I am to receive letters, especially those as extensive as yours!!! Thank you!!! I won't write to you about any factual details, because I'm keeping a detailed diary. I'll only speak about how I'm feeling. Strictly speaking, I now have only a single thought and a single feeling: waiting for 21/9 May, when, with all my obligations discharged, I'll be taking my seat on the steamer "Prince Bismarck" and heading for Hamburg. Everything else I'm trying to endure patiently. The only heartening hours, or, more accurately, minutes, are when I'm alone by myself in the evening, and I can look forward to the night and the morning safe from visitors. As for the rest of the time, in the first place I feel constantly tired, as though I'd walked 40 versts. They say this is a feature of the local spring air. Secondly, I'm suffering more than ever from the company of strangers, more so because it is necessary to speak in German, and sometimes even in English! But there are unexpectedly pleasant hours too. For example, yesterday I spent the whole day at the home of the local Jurgenson, i.e. the premier musical publisher Schirmer. At first I found this tiresome and unbearable, but by the evening amongst exceptionally kind and considerate people I suddenly felt good and at ease. But can truly be said that people have been very nice. Indeed, people have generally been well disposed towards me, and I cannot praise them enough. They have been almost too kind, and it's proved difficult for me to make time for myself. I like New York more and more. Incidentally, there's a magnificent Central Park here. And remarkably people of my age can remember very well when cows used to graze on its site. I go to rehearsals almost every day. The new hall, in which the festival is to take place, is magnificent, and its size surpasses any halls we have. On 10 May/28 April I'am going to Niagara, on the 15th I'm conducting in Philadelphia, the 18th in Baltimore, and I leave on the 21st. The weather is excellent, but much too hot. All the trees blossomed long ago. How far away I am from you! When you receive my letter-diary, I shall still be at sea. I gently and firmly hug and kiss you.
