<ref name="note1">On 26 April/8 May 1891 Tchaikovsky was in [[New York]], in the middle of his North American concert tour. On the day that he wrote this letter, he also noted in his [[Diaries_(April_1891)#Friday_26_April.2F8_May_1891|diary]]: "It is beginning to become difficult to find the time for letters and this journal. I am besieged by visitors: reporters, composers, libretto authors ... but above all there are whole piles of letters from all corners of America with requests for ''autographs'', which I answer very nicely". It is very likely that this letter was Tchaikovsky's reply to one such request — note by Alexander Poznansky in {{bib|2003/61|Письма Чайковского в Йельском Университете (США)}} (2003), p. 86.</ref><br />
