Поэтому письмо твоё прочёл с величайшим интересом. Признаюсь, меня, во-1-х, удивляет бестактность Плеве, который предостерегает тебя от козней Шаховского и тем как бы заранее предубеждает тебя против него; а во-2-х, я не верю этому Плеве н, судя по тому, что ты пишешь, думаю, что Шаховский и его жена очень искренно возгорелись симпатией к тебе. Конечно, осторожность не мешает, — но вообще склонен думать, что ''Шаховскому'' нет никакого интереса быть в отношении тебя враждебным. Если он боится лишиться своего губернаторства, — то ведь не ты же его лишишь этого блага и ведь все равно кто-нибудь да заменит его. Потом. сколько помнится, Ревель летом очень мил и симпатичен; к тому же там Маля и Мина, так что в общем я за тебя теперь покоен. Что значат слова Дурново, что вместо случившихся минусов будут плюсы? Есть ли это намёк, что ты скоро будешь губернатором? Я уже имел о тебе известие от Сани Литке, который до сих пор не может утешиться, что я не нашёл его письма. Про себя интересного сказать нечего. Работаю аккуратно, усердно; живу по обыкновенью ровно и правильно. Перестал совсем пить водку и очень этим доволен; не только не бывает никогда теперь сонливости, но и пищеварение стало гораздо лучше, а ''изжог'' совсем не бывает. От Модеста имел сведение, что он в Гранкине чувствует себя ~~от лично~~, несмотря на пребывание там столь противной ему Алины. По вечерам я иногда играю в винт у Новиковой, а также у новых знакомых: ''Гурко''.
