Soeben habe ich Ihre freundlichen Zeilen erhalten. Der Brief wartete auf mich, da ich nur erst heute von einer kleinen Reise zurückgekommen bin; ich hoffe aber, dass meine Antwort Sie noch in ''Bayreuth'' treffen wird.

Ich bin bereit im nächsten ''Februar'' wieder nach {{sic|America|Amerika}} zu gehen und freue mich sehr darauf. Einen schönen (aus 30 Männer und Knaben) Kirchenchor habe ich schon ausgewählt und der ''Dirigent'' von diesem Chor, Herr ''Kalischewsky'' aus Kief, schreibt mir, dass in jedem Augenblick ist er bereit die Reise mit mir zu unternehmen. Entschuldigen Sie, dass ich weiter französisch fortsetzen werde; es ist mir zu schwer deutsch zu schreiben.

Pour régler cette affaire il faudrait que je puisse préciser la somme qu'on pourrait proposer à M[onsieu]r ''Kalischewsky''. Songez, mon cher ami, que faire venir en Amérique pour y rester {{sic|plusieur|plusieurs}} semaines toute une compagnie chorale, — cela coûte bien cher! Il faudrait qu'on fixa la somme que l'on pourrait dépenser pour les frais de voyage et l'entretien et puis la comme que l'on pourrait proposer à M[onsieu]r Kalischewsky comme {{sic|rénumération|rémunération}} pour sa peine et celle de s'on chœur.

J'attendrai donc que M[onsieu]r ''Reno'' après mûre {{sic|réflexion|reflexion}}, calcule ce que l'on peut offrir à ''Kalischewsky'', fixe la somme qu'on trouve possible de proposer et me le fasse savoir. Quant à moi, vous me proposez de communiquer à M[onsieu]r Reno mes ''Bedingungen''. Je ne suis pas très {{sic|intéressé|interessé}} et cependant je ne dédaignerais pas de gagner un peu d'argent en Amérique. Je ne sais vraiment ce que je pourrais demander et je {{sic|prefère|préfère}} que M[onsieu]r Reno me fasse savoir ce que l'on croit juste et possible de me proposer.

Je vais tout de suite {{sic|ecrire|écrire}} à M[onsieu]r Reno, lui annoncer 1) que le choeur est choisi et qu'il est prêt à partir pour l'Amérique dès que je désignerai l'époque du départ; 2) que moi de mon côté je ne demande pas mieux que de revenir dans un pays ou l'on a été si hospitalier, si amical et bon pour moi. Quant aux conditions, {{sic|pècuniaires|pécuniaires}}, il faut que M[onsieu]r Reno désigne ce que l'on croit possible de nous donner.

Vous ne sauriez croire combien cela me réjouit et combien je Vous suis reconnaissant que Vous ayez engagé le petit ''Conus''. Quant à ''Brodsky'' qui est un de mes meilleurs amis et que je considère comme un excellent artiste, je suis tout à fait heureux d'avoir en vue de le revoir à {{sic|New-Jork|New York}}.

I have just received your friendly lines. The letter had been waiting for me, since I have only today returned from a short trip, but I hope that my answer will still reach you in ''[[Bayreuth]]''.

I am prepared to come to America again next ''February'', and am very happy at the prospect. I have already selected a beautiful church choir (of 30 men and boys), and the ''conductor'' of this choir, Mr ''[[Kalishevsky]]'', writes to me from [[Kiev]] that he is prepared to travel with me at a moment's notice. Pardon me for continuing in French; writing in German is too difficult for me.

To settle this matter I must be able to specify the amount that could be offered to Mr [[Kalishevsky]]. I think, dear friend, that to bring an entire choral company to America to stay for several weeks will be very expensive! It would be necessary to stipulate the amount that could be spent on travel expenses and subsistence, as well as the amount to be offered to Mr [[Kalishevsky]] as remuneration for his troubles and that of his chorus.

And so I shall await what Mr ''Reno'', after due consideration, calculates what he can offer to [[Kalishevsky]], and lets me know the amount he finds it possible to offer. As for me, I suggest you inform Mr Reno of my ''conditions''. I have no great self-interest, although I should not be averse to earning a little money in America. I really do not know what to ask, and I should prefer that Mr Reno lets me know what he thinks it is appropriate and possible to propose.

I am going to write shortly to Mr Reno, informing him, 1) that the choir has been chosen and is ready to leave for America as soon as I designate the time of departure, 2) that I, for my part, can ask for nothing better than to return to a country where I have been received so hospitably, friendly and well. As to the pecuniary conditions, it is necessary for Mr Reno what he thinks possible to offer us.
