Непременно побываю в Каменке, ибо между строк твоего письма читаю, что ты не прочь, чтобы я приехал, а главное, ужасно хочется тебя видеть. Все зависит от «''Иоланты''». Она у меня шла до сих пор тихо и вяло главное оттого, что вместе с этим у меня была несносная, утомительная работа—корректура партитуры «Евгения Онегина», которую Юргенсон издаёт вновь. По этому случаю я исправил массу своих собственных ошибок и недосмотров и ещё большую массу юргенсоновских; это занятие отравляло мне жизнь. Наконец я его кончил, отвёз в Москву и теперь вернулся, чтобы посвятить все своё время опере. Кстати, скажи Модесту, что чем более я углубляюсь в сочинение музыки к «Иоланте», тем более восхищаюсь качествами его либретто. Отлично сделано, а стихи местами очень, очень красивы. Итак, когда я вдоволь наслажусь ничем не смущаемой работой сочинения, когда подвину её настолько, что на душе будет спокойно, или когда, Бог даст, недели через три совсем концу её, тогда поеду в Каменку, по дороге побывав у Николая Ильича, где меня ждут с нетерпением.

Прожил у меня целую неделю ''Кокодес'', т. е. Коля Переслени. Так как он сейчас же со всеми дачниками перезнакомился, все время проводил с ними, появляясь у меня только за обедом и ужином, то работать он мне ничуть не мешал и его гощение мне доставило большое удовольствие. Очень весёлый и приятный человек. Вместе с ним и в Москву ездили.

Ты совсем не ''футляр''. В тебе содержания очень много, только все заключающееся в футляре сложено пока в беспорядке, и нужно время, чтобы усмотреть, чем преимущественно футляр наполнен. А впрочем, пожалуйста, не думай обо всем этом; все само собой устроится. Наслаждайся своей молодостью и учись дорожить временем; чем больше живу, тем более ужасаюсь бестолковом трате этого драгоценнейшего элемента жизни. Эта несколько велеречивая фраза есть не что иное, как совет ''как можно больше читать''. Между прочим, у тебя чудное свойство: усваивать читаемое, т. е. не забывать, а складывать до поры до времени в какой-то амбар. Такого амбара у меня нет. Попросту сказать, никакой памяти. Посылаю несколько нумеров «''Fliegende Blaetter''».

I am certainly coming to [[Kamenka]], because between the lines in your letter I read that you would not mind my coming, and most importantly, I want terribly much to see you. Everything depends on "''[[Iolanta]]''". Until now it has been progressing slowly and sluggishly, mainly because of the fact that alongside this I had some intolerably tedious work—proofreading the full score of "[[Yevgeny Onegin]]", which [[Jurgenson]] is republishing. This required the corrections of many of my own mistakes and oversights, and a far greater multitude of [[Jurgenson]]'s; this task poisoned my life. Finally I completed it, took the score to [[Moscow]], and I've now returned so that I can devote all my time to the opera. By the way, tell [[Modest]] that the more I immerse myself in composing the music to "[[Iolanta]]", the greater admiration I have for the quality of his libretto. It is excellently done, and the poetry is sometimes very, very beautiful. And so when I've enjoyed my fill of composition without disturbance, or when I've pushed it forward to such a point that I can rest easily—God willing—in around three weeks I will go to [[Kamenka]], calling at [[Nikolay Ilyich]]'s on the way, where I'm eagerly awaited <ref name="note1"/>.

"Kokodes", i.e. Kolya Peresleni stayed with me for a week. As he immediately made friends with all the local residents he spent all his time with them, appearing here only for lunch and dinner; he didn't disturb my work at all, and he was a delightful guest. A very cheerful and pleasant man. We also went to [[Moscow]] together.

You are by no means a ''container'' <ref name="note2"/>. You have a great deal of content, only everything contained in the container is still heaped about in disarray and it will take time to discern what the container is chiefly filled with. Anyway, please don't think about all this; everything will work out on its own. Enjoy your youth and learn that time is valuable. The longer I live, the more I'm appalled at the senseless squandering of this most precious element of life. This somewhat high-blown phrase is none other than the advice to ''read as much as possible''. Incidentally, you have have the wonderful gift of absorbing what you have read, i.e. you don't forget it, but accumulate and store it away for a while. I don't have such a store. Frankly, I have no memory at all. I'm sending you several copies of "''Fliegende Blätter''" <ref name="note3"/>.
