Простите ради Бога, что так поздно отвечаю на Ваше письмо, — но я странствовал по родным в разных уголках провинции и лишь сегодня здесь нашёл письмо Ваше.

Предложение Дирекции принимаю с величайшим удовольствием, ''но не позволите ли Вы мне составить программу не исключительно из моих сочинений''? Это не есть притворная скромность, а боязнь, что многие будут жаловаться на излишек моей музыки и непрочь будут прослушать под моим управлением что-нибудь, напр[имер], классическое. Спорить не буду, — но предлагаю это в Вашем интересе, ибо я убеждён, что найдутся люди, заинтересованные тем, могу ли я хорошо провести симфонию Бетховена. С другой стороны, убеждён, что многих даже благосклонно ко мне относящихся слушателей пугает концерт, составленный исключительно из моих произведений. Сужу о других по себе. Терпеть не могу целый вечер слышать произведения одного и того же автора, хотя бы и очень хорошего.

Итак, решите в Дирекции этот вопрос и уведомьте о решении, адресовав ответ в ''г[ород] Клин, Моск[овской] губ[ернии]''. Около 1-го сентября я буду уже дома.
