I am, thank God, well and continuing to work diligently; the work has progressed most significantly. ''[[Vladimir Nápravník]]'' is still here. He turned out to be a very pleasant lodger, with an warm, even-tempered disposition. In the evenings he's my invaluable partner for 4 hands, and I love this entertainment almost more than vint. He's working very keenly. We went to [[Moscow]] for 4 days during Shrovetide. Just imagine that at Shrovetide the Bolshoi Theatre did 5 of my operas, i.e. "''[[Onegin]]''" twice, and "[[The Queen of Spades]]" 3 times. How about that!!! I've earned a lot of money this season. I want to try to at least save some of it for a rainy day. I'm going to have a rather unpleasant time in April. Wanting to help ''[[Pryanishnikov]]'' and his ''Association'', who are moving to [[Moscow]] for the spring season, I promised to conduct three operas for them ("''Faust''", "''The Demon''" and "''[[Onegin]]''"), and I'll probably have to live in [[Moscow]] for a whole month, taking time away from my work and spending money. Я бессовестный человек, что редко тебе пишу и как бы считаюсь письмами. Ты в письмах теперь очень, вероятно, нуждаешься, и давно бы следовало написать. Я, слава Богу, здоров и продолжаю усиленно работать; работа продвинулась очень значительно. ''Володя Направник'' все ещё здесь. Он оказался очень приятным сожителем, ровного, кроткого нрава. По вечерам мой драгоценный партнёр в 4 руки, а я это удовольствие люблю едва ли не больше ещё, чем винт. Работает он очень прилежно. На масленице мы ездили в Москву на 4 дня. Представь, что на масленице в Большом театре шло 5 моих опер, т. е. 2 раза «''Онегин''» и 3 «Пиковая дама». Каково!!! Я заработал в нынешнем сезоне очень много денег. Хочу попробовать хоть часть их при беречь на черный день. В апреле мне предстоит довольно неприятная вещь. Желая помочь ''Прянишникову'' и его ''Товариществу'', которые на весенний сезон перебираются в Москву, я обещал дирижировать у них тремя операми (« ''Фауст'' », «''Демон''», «''Онегин''»), и придётся, вероятно, целый месяц прожить в Москве, оторваться от работы и проживать деньги.

На этой неделе (т. е. на предстоящей, в среду) еду в Петербург на 10 дней.

Что-то давно нет от тебя письма. Яковлев уверяет меня, что тебя предназначают в ''тобольские губернаторы''. Правда ли?

Что ж? Я не особенно против этого. Буду ездить к вам гостить. Целую.
