Очень сожалею, что мне невозможно дождаться Вас в Москве и переговорить кое о чем, между прочим и об неожиданном бедствии, свалившемся на голову подателя сего письма ''Андрея Фёдор[овича]'' Арендса. В Ваше отсутствие его пригласили в контору и предложили подать в отставку к 1-му августа, если к тому времени он не в состоянии будет играть. А так как болезнь ''пальца'' у него оказывается хронической и играть он уже больше никогда не будет, — то это предложение равносильно безусловной отставке. Между тем ''Арендс'' нажил себе болезнь пальца на службе театра и заслуживал бы благодаря своим выдающимся композиторским способностям, чтобы Дирекция приняла участие в его положении. До сих пор он надеялся, что услуги, оказанные им ''Малому театру'', для которого он неоднократно писал, и очень удачно, обширные партитуры, — обеспечивают ему его жалованье; т. е. что ввиду его болезни он вместо участия в оркестре может приносить пользу как композитор. Теперь надежды эти разлетелись вдребезги, и положение для семейного человека ужасное. Убедительнейшее прошу Вас, дорогой Павел Михайлович, войти в положение Арендса и что-нибудь сделать для него. Неужели в самом деле ничего нельзя придумать для того, чтобы усердный и талантливый человек не лишался тех средств, которые давала ему служба! Я надеюсь на Вас и ещё раз прошу за него убедительнейшее.<br />

I very much regret that it was impossible for me to wait for you in [[Moscow]], and to talk about, amongst other things, an unexpected calamity, falling on the head of the bearer of this letter, [[Andrey Arends|''Andrey Fyodorovich'' Arends]]. In your absence, he was called to the office and invited to tender his resignation by 1st August, if by that time he was not in a condition to play. And since it transpires that he has a chronic condition in his ''finger'', and more likely than not he will never play again, then this proposal is tantamount to unconditional resignation. Meanwhile, ''[[Arends]]'' contracted the finger condition in the service of the theatre, and he deserves gratitude due to his outstanding abilities as a composer, and the Directorate ought to accept its part in his situation. Until now he had hoped that the services he had rendered to the ''Maly Theate'' — for which time and again he has written vast and most successful scores — would guarantee his salary; i.e., because of his illness, he could benefit as a composer instead of as a member of the orchestra. Now these hopes have been dashed to smithereens, and his situation as a family man is awful. I earnestly request you, dear [[Pavel Pchelnikov|Pavel Mikhaylovich]], to put yourself in [[Arends]]' position and to do something for him. Is it really impossible to devise something so that a diligent and talented man does not forfeit the means that his service has earned! My hopes rest with you, and once again I plead for him most earnestly.<br />
