Спасибо, милый друг Сергей Алексеевич, за письмо и портрет, весьма живо воспроизводящий черты симпатичного мне человечка! Вы спрашиваете, как называется моя новая опера? «''Иоланта''». В последнее пребывание в Петербурге я вместе с Всеволожским и Направником распределил роли, и Вы назначены вторым исполнителем (''первый Яковлев'') партии ''Роберта''. Вам её должны прислать; если же почему-либо не пришлют до конца службы, — то можете получить оперу у Юргенсона по записочке на втором полу листочке. Думаю, что и без ''Сонки'' Вы можете лето провести с пользой для себя. Главное, верьте больше в себя, будьте самоувереннее, старайтесь победить свою робость и излишнюю скромность. Это необходимо для Ваших успехов на сцене, — а ''Сонки'' и его учение сами по себе. До свиданья, голубчик.

On my last visit to [[Petersburg]], along with [[Vsevolozhsky]] and [[Nápravník]] I assigned the roles, and you were selected for the second performance (''Yakovlev is first'' <ref name="note2"/> of the part of ''Robert''. You should be sent this, but if for any reason you do not receive it before then end of your service <ref name="note3"/>, then you can obtain the opera from Jurgenson's using the note on the second half of the sheet <ref name="note5"/>. I think that even without ''Sonki'' <ref name="note4"/> you might spend the summer usefully.
