Спасибо, милый мой Толя, за обстоятельное письмо. Однако немножко страшновато за тебя, если ''холера'' разыгралась не на шутку. Я нисколько не боюсь, что ты ею заразишься, но, должно быть, очень тяжело иметь по должности частые случаи видеть больных, да и вообще жить среди населения, в коем гуляет эпидемия.

Скажи, пожалуйста, можно ли верить газетам или они дают неверные цифры? Есть ли надежда, что проклятая болезнь не сильно разовьётся в Нижнем? Существует ли ярмарка действительно или это только фикция для успокоения публики? Вообще, как в самом Нижнем относятся к болезни?

Если ''Черевин'' может тебя пристроить, — то не дурно, чтобы ты с ним познакомился. А я все думаю, что не вернуться ли тебе в судебное ведомство? Как ты об этом думаешь?

Модест тоже попал в холерное место. В нескольких вёрстах от них, Бог знает, откуда и как она занеслась, и несмотря на то, что, начиная с губернатора, чуть ли не вся Полтавская администрация борется с болезнью на месте, — она делает в народе массу жертв. Кажется, Коля и Модест, хоть и храбрятся, но долго не выдержат и уедут. Модест написал новую комедию, про которую отзывается сам с похвалой, но говорит, что она не сценична. Очень жаль! А я, бедненький, терзаюсь над ''корректурами''; разом столько их привалило, что, по крайней мере, недели три ещё придётся заниматься исключительно ими. Вообще же я очень доволен своим новым домом и во всяком случае рад, что уехал из Майданова. Ты, однако, не пишешь, где ты поселился, при тебе ли Иван и вообще, как ты устроился? Думаю, что тебе теперь много дела, но все же напиши, когда можно будет. Приехал ли В. Д. Коншин? Вообще, съезжаются ли коммерсанты?

Thank you, my dear [[Tolya]], for your detailed letter <ref name="note1"/>. However, it's a little frightening for you if ''cholera'' has broken out in earnest. I'm not afraid that you will catch it, but it must be very difficult in your situation to see those afflicted, and to generally live and walk among the populace during such an epidemic.

Please tell me, can the newspapers be relied upon or are they giving inaccurate figures? Is there any hope that this damnable disease won't take hold in [[Nizhny]]? Is there really a fair, or is that merely a fiction to calm the public? What's the overall situation regarding the disease in [[Nizhny]] itself?

If you might be seconded to ''Cherevin'' <ref name="note2"/>, then it's not a bad thing that you get to know him. And I still wonder if you should go back to the judiciary? What do you think to this?

[[Modest]] is also in a place afflicted by cholera. Just a few versts away, God knows from where and how it came, and despite the fact the governor himself and almost the whole of the Poltava government are battling the disease there, it has claimed so many people as victims. Although [[Kolya]] and [[Modest]] are brave, I don't think they shall remain there long before leaving. [[Modest]] has written a new comedy <ref name="note3"/>, about which he himself speaks highly, but it's said that it isn't theatrical. A great shame! And I, poor fellow, am being tormented by ''proofs'' <ref name="note4"/>; they are weighing me down so much that I'm having to deal with nothing else for at least three weeks. In general I'm very happy with my new home, and in any case I'm glad to have left [[Maydanovo]]. However, you haven't written to say where you're staying, if Ivan <ref name="note5"/> is with you, and whether you're settled in general? I thing you have a lot to do, but still write whenever you can. Has V. D. Konshin <ref name="note6"/> arrived? Are the merchants coming there generally?
