Наконец, мои колебания, ехать ли куда-нибудь вообще и куда именно, кончились неожиданно и таким образом, что ты будешь сердиться и огорчаться, если в самом деле так желала видеть меня в Куралове. Во-первых, мои работы, требующие постоянного общения с Москвой (приготовление всего нотного материала оперы и балета к началу сезона), мешают мне выехать раньше конца августа, а затем я должен ехать прямо отсюда в ''Вену''. Меня ещё весной приглашали продирижировать на Венской выставке концертом из своих сочинений, а теперь так мило, лестно приглашают, что я счёл долгом принят приглашение. Я говорю ''долг'', ибо считаю себя обязанным всячески поддерживать престиж русской музыки за границей.

Итак, вместо приятного отдыха в интересующей меня местности и среди милых людей, т. е. в Куралове, или же гошения у брата Николая или в Каменке, придётся лететь на берега Дуная и страдать от треволнений публичности в городе, где до сих пор ко мне относились с враждебностью или, по крайней мере, с презрительным игнорированием. А я очень и очень увлекался мечтою поездки к вам и почти решил это сделать. Но, Бог даст, я посещу вас в будущем году или же даже зимой, в случае, если ты останешься там на зиму. Мне очень печально думать, что долго не увидимся, но, во-1-х, может быть, Пётр Иванович найдёт в Питере место, а во-2-х, ей-Богу же, я приеду в Куралово хотя бы зимой. Во всяком случае, не сердись, пожалуйста, и проси Катю и всех вообще на меня не сердиться. Я до безумия утомлён от своей ужасной, каторжной работы!!!

Получил вчера письмо от ''Эммы''; она покидает Кондратьевных в сентябре и принимает место в семействе Анненковых в Симбирске. Бедненькая пишет, что плачет ужасно. Но Мери её положительно выгоняет.

Душечка, миленькая, не сердись вообще и между прочим за короткое, неинтересное письмо. Некогда, ей-Богу, некогда!
