So why the hell do I accept these foreign engagements? It's only misery and pain. But I think this time I made a consummate blunder . One gentleman had forewarned me that the room in which I was due to conduct was essentially an enormous restaurant — but I decided not to worry, because in my letters of invitation this arena was described by the grandiose name of the "Grosse Musikhalle". I arrived here yesterday evening, and found for some reason that there was no-one to meet me, but I didn't take offence: on the contrary, I was delighted. In disguise I went straight to the Exhibition. It was Sunday, a lovely day, with many people. I found much of interest at the exhibition. Later I enquired about the aforementioned Musikhalle, where there just happened to be a concert. It turned out to be absolutely correct that the Musikhalle was an enormous restaurant, full of stuffiness and reeking of unpleasant oils and other consumable items. I immediately made up my mind that either the tables had to be removed and the tavern converted into a hall, or I would withdraw. The gentleman responsible for organising the Exhibition concerts came at once, and I presented him with my ultimatum. I'm considering whether I could make it to Kamenka and catch you there.
Gutmann agreed to the tables being removed, but not before attempting to assure me that the tables, sausages and beer would not cause any interference. That same day Sapelnikov came with Menter, and since then I've not been parted from them. There were two rehearsals yesterday: one from 9 until 12, the other from 4.30 to 6. The orchestra turned out not to be too bad, but they ridiculously weak in composition. Over the course of the day, pondering all the circumstances and anticipating the shabbiness and insignificance of this concert, I suddenly decided to flee, and Menter was delighted by the idea. A few remaining friends, Door and others, were indignant about the whole thing. Two hours after the rehearsal, I wrote Gutmann my withdrawal , and left with Menter and Sapelnikov for Itter . We travelled all night, arriving at the castle at 9 o'clock in the morning. It's magnificent and divine here, and I'm so glad to have come.

I hug you all.
<references>
