Горячее спасибо за письмо твоё. Твоя мысль быть когда-нибудь моим спутником очень улыбается мне: от души желаю, чтобы она осуществилась. Голубчик, скажи ''Папе'' следующее. Он желал, чтобы в Москве на концертах Дирекции театров я дирижировал сюитой из «''Щелкунчика''». Но эту сюиту будут играть и в Музыкальном обществе, и у Шостаковского, и воспрепятствовать этому я не могу. Не лучше ли, если я сыграю не сюиту, а просто целое ''первое действие «Щелкунчика»'', хотя бы и с выпуском нескольких нумеров? А то все ''сюита'' да ''сюита''. Мне-то легче дирижировать сюитой, но интереса будет больше, если что-нибудь другое, Москве неизвестное. Но в таком случае нужно будет ноты привезти из Петербурга. Предоставляю это на его волю.

Моя ''тоска'' прошла, но тем не менее я жду не дождусь, когда кончится это путешествие. Здесь меня всячески честят, — но до того раздирают на клочки, что я устаю до умопомрачения. Оркестр ничего себе. Были две репетиции, завтра третья и первый концерт; через неделю второй, а там я вольный казак. Поручение твоё исполнил, но так не особенно много было денег, то я купил тебе прибор несколько менее дорогой, чем у Сани. Конечно, это будет дар старого твоего друга и о взимании с тебя денег прошу и речи не заводить. Всем нашим передавай мои поклоны, а твоим родителям и сестрам (а также Котьке) тысячу нежностей. Обнимаю тебя, голубчик.

Warmest thanks for your letter <ref name="note1"/>. Your idea that one day you might be my travelling companion made me smile a great deal <ref name="note2"/>: I sincerely wish that this could happen. Golubchik, tell your [[Eduard Nápravník|Papa]] the following. He wanted me to conduct the [[The Nutcracker (suite)|suite]] from ''[[The Nutcracker]]'' at a concert for the Theatre Directorate in [[Moscow]]. But this suite is to be played in the Musical Society, by Shostakovsky <ref name="note3"/>, and there's nothing I can do to prevent this. Would it not be better if, instead of the [[The Nutcracker (suite)|suite]], I played the whole ''first act of "[[The Nutcracker]]"'', albeit with the omission of some numbers? It's one ''suite'' for another ''suite'' all the same. For myself it's easier to conduct the [[The Nutcracker (suite)|suite]], but if anything, there will be more interest in something that's unknown in [[Moscow]]. But in that event I shall have to fetch the music from [[Petersburg]]. I leave it up to him <ref name="note4"/>.

My ''melancholy'' has passed, but nevertheless I still cannot wait for this journey to end. Here I'm lauded in every possible way, but between being torn to shreds, I'm exhausted to the point of madness. The orchestra itself is passable. There have been two rehearsals, a third tomorrow before the first concert; the second is a week later, and then I'm a free Cossack <ref name="note5"/>. Your order has been fulfilled, but without all that much money I bought you something that was rather less expensive than [[Sanya]]'s. Of course this is a gift from your old friend, and the question of your paying for it does not arise. Convey my respects to everyone, and a thousand tender greetings to your parents and sisters (and Kotka too). I embrace you, golubchik.
