	I had been intending to write to you for a very long time, but life is such that I haven't had time to talk in depth. All the while, what I really wanted was to have a serious discussion with you about [[Odessa]]. Probably you have already received or, if not, will receive shortly, an invitation from the Directorate of the [[Odessa]] Branch of the RMS to take up the management of their college, to be in charge of symphony concerts and, in general, to have full dictatorial power over [[Odessa]]'s music. ''[[Kupernik]]'', who is now the soul of [[Odessa]]'s business, asked me to influence you favourably towards them. But I have been wavering until now and uncertain how to deal with this matter. On the one hand, it's as if this business was tailor-made for you, i.e. characteristic of your active nature with a flair for ''organisation''; and it would be quite pleasant to think that you are standing at the head of a musical enterprise in a big Russian city, which has so much potential to become a centre of music in the ''South''. On the other hand, I wouldn't like to tear you away from [[Paris]]. But Zverev, with whom I spoke about it yesterday, is certainly set on ''[[Odessa]]'', and this has forced me too to stand resolutely on [[Kupernik]]'s side, and for [[Odessa]]'s management in general. [[Odessa]] isn't too far from [[Vienna]] and from Western Europe in general and, it goes without saying, you will have to negotiate regular vacations for yourself, so every year you will continue giving concerts abroad. In this way, even after having moved to [[Odessa]], you won't break ties with Europe. At the same time you will have in your hands a difficult but interesting business that will enrich your life. Я давно уже собирался тебе писать, да жизнь так устроилась, что времени для беседы по душе у меня не хватало. Между тем мне именно по душе хотелось поговорить с тобой по поводу Одессы. Ты, вероятно, уже получил, а если нет, то скоро получишь приглашение от Дирекции Одесского отд[еления] РМО принять на себя директорство тамошнего училища, заведование симфоническими концертами и вообще полную диктаторскую власть над одесской музыкой. ''Куперник'', который теперь есть душа одесского дела, просил меня повлиять на тебя в благоприятном для них смысле. Но я до сих пор колебался и не знал, как мне относиться к этому вопросу? С одной стороны, как будто дело для тебя подходящее, т. е. свойственное твоей деятельной натуре, имеющей жилку ''организаторства''; да и как-то приятно было бы думать, что ты стоишь во главе музыкального дела в большом русском городе, имеющем много данных, чтобы сделаться музыкальным центром ''юга''. С другой стороны, и от Парижа отрывать тебя не хочется. Но Зверев, с которым я беседовал вчера об этом, безусловно стоит за ''Одессу'', и это обстоятельство заставило и меня решительно стать на сторону Куперника и вообще одесской дирекции. Одесса недалеко от Вены и вообще Западной Европы, и ты, разумеется, должен выговорить себе периодические отпуска, так, чтобы ежегодно продолжать концертировать за границей. Таким образом, ты, переехавши в Одессу, не разорвёшь связи с Европой. В то же время у тебя будет в руках сложное, интересное дело, которое скрасит твою жизнь. Интересно, как ты и Вера отнесётесь к вопросу об Одессе. Напиши, милый, несколько слов (в ''Клин'').
