Спасибо, милый Модинька, за оба письма. Письма сильно поддерживают мою энергию, постоянно готовую упасть. Концерт сошёл блестяще, т. е. по единодушному отзыву всех я имел настоящий триумф, так что ''Сен-Санс'', появившийся после меня, несколько пострадал вследствие моего необычайного успеха. Это, конечно, приятно, но зато, что за наказание здешняя жизнь в ''сезоне''! У меня уже все завтраки и все обеды разобраны, и все это у них делается необыкновенно долго. Вчера мне и Сен-Сансу Дирекция давала обед в Вестминстерском клубе. Шик и роскошь невероятные, но, севши в 7, мы встали в 11½ (без преувеличения). Кроме этого приходится ежедневно бывать на дневных концертах, ибо приходят приглашать и отказывать неловко. Напр[имер], сегодня пришлось быть у Сарасате, который ко мне удивительно мил. Трудно дать понятие о бешеном движении лондонских улиц. В прошлые разы я попадал зимой, в другую погоду, и не мог иметь настоящего понятия. Черт знает что такое!!! Париж — положительно деревня в сравнении с Лондоном. Во время катания на Риджент стрит и в Гайд-парке столько экипажей, такая роскошь и красота запряжки, что глаза разбегаются. Сейчас был у посольши на дневном ''чае''. Она на вид совершенная кухарка, но очень симпатичное и доброе лицо. Очень милый тут секретарь ''Сазонов''. Вообще, что я тут вижу народу! И как все это утомительно! По утрам я сильно страдаю нравственно, потом нахожусь в каком-то чаду, но мысль у меня только одна: поскорее бы все кончилось!! Я в Кембридже буду вести подробный дневник. По-видимому, история будет прекурьёзная. Григ болен. Остальные все приедут. Сильно склонен думать, что ты кончишь ''Гранкиным'' и, ей-Богу, хорошо сделаешь. Лучше съездить за границу так, ненадолго. <br />

Thank you, dear [[Modinka]], for both letters. Letters are a great boost to my strength, which is constantly about to lapse. The concert went off brilliantly, i.e. by unanimous opinion I had a real triumph, such that ''[[Saint-Saëns]]'', who appeared after me, suffered somewhat as a consequence of my extraordinary success. This is certainly pleasant, but, then again, how punishing life is here during the ''season''! Even all my lunches and dinners have been taken over, and they take an exceptionally long time over everything here. Yesterday the Directorate gave a dinner for me and [[Saint-Saëns]] at the Westminster Club. It was incredibly chic and luxurious, but, having been seated at 7, we rose at 11.30 (without exaggeration). Besides this I'm obliged to go to concerts every afternoon, because people turn up to invite me and it's awkward to refuse. For example, today I had to visit I had to visit Sarasate <ref name="note1"/>, who was remarkably nice to me. It's difficult to describe the frenetic bustle on [[London]]'s streets. Last time I came in the winter, in different weather, and so couldn't really conceive of it. To hell with it all!! [[Paris]] is positively a village compared with [[London]]. While riding through Regent Street and Hyde Park there were so many luxurious and beautiful harnesses that my eyes were darting all over the place. I've just been at the Ambassador's for afternoon ''tea''. She looks the image of a cook, but has a very likeable and kind face. The very nice secretary ''Sazonov'' is here. I see so many people here in general! And how tiring this all is! My spirits are lowest in the mornings, when I find myself in some sort of daze, but I have only one thought: that it should all be over as soon as possible!! I shall keep a detailed diary in [[Cambridge]]. By all appearances, it will be a peculiar tale. [[Grieg]] is ill. Everyone else is coming. I'm most inclined to think that you'll end up at ''[[Grankino]]'' and, my God, you'll do well with it. Much better to go abroad for just a little while.<br />
