Пожалуй, это письмо уже не застанет тебя в Питере. Прости, голубчик, что так лениво отвечаю на письма. Ей-Богу, нет возможности писать! Чертовская жизнь! Ни одной приятно минуты; только вечная тревога, тоска, страх, усталость, отвращение и т. д. Но теперь уж близок конец. Впрочем, справедливость требует сказать, что много милых людей и много всяческой ласки мне оказывается. Все будущие доктора кроме больного Грига съехались. Из них кроме Сен-Санса симпатичен ''Бойто''. Зато ''Брух'' — омерзительная, надутая фигура. Послезавтра утром я еду в ''Кембридж'' и жить буду не в гостинице, а в отведённой мне квартире, у доктора ''Maitland'а'', от коего имел любезнейшее пригласительное письмо. Всего проведу там одну ночь. В день приезда будет концерт и банкет, а на другой день церемония. В 4 часа все будет кончено, и я
почти без остановки проеду в Париж. оттуда через Швейцарию в Тироль к Ментер и в Гранкино. Я, конечно, вполне одобряю твоё гощение в Оптиной пустыни и завидую даже, но где ты поместишься? Мне что-то кажется, что ты в Гранкино ещё при мне приедешь.

I suppose that this letter won't find in [[Piter]]. Forgive me, golubchik, for my laziness in replying to your letter. My God, it's impossible to write! It's a hellish life! There's not a single pleasant moment; only constant worry, yearning, fear, tiredness, repugnance, etc. But the end is getting close now. To be fair, however, I must say that there are many nice people who have shown me much kindness. All the future doctors, except the poorly [[Grieg]], have gathered. Of them all, besides [[Saint-Saëns]], I found ''Boïto'' sympathetic. Then again, ''Bruch'' is a repulsive, pompous figure. The day after tomorrow I am going to ''[[Cambridge]]'' in the morning, and won't be staying in a hotel but rather in a flat allocated to me, at Doctor ''[[Maitland]]'s'', from whom I received a most kind letter of invitation. I will only be spending one night there. On the day of my arrival there will be a concert and a banquet, and the ceremony is on the following day. It will all be over by 4, and I'll set off for [[Paris]] almost immediately; from there I shall go via Switzerland to the Tyrol, to [[Menter]] and then on to [[Grankino]]. I am of course quite supportive of you visiting the Optina Monastery and I even envy you, but where would you stay? It seems to me that you'll be at [[Grankino]] while I'm still there.
