They didn't do so today, and when I enquired why, they said that it was necessary to pay more for this. Let us say that [[Alyosha]] does not like wine, but this is poor all the same. At 6 o'clock, once it became altogether dark, I insisted on a lamp, as had been agreed (you recall, it was included in the bill). The girl came back, saying that we had to pay more. I made a terrible scene, shouted, called for the ''Direttore'' and, being very agitated, almost struck him. The result was that the lamp will be there tomorrow. Having learned that only four people were dining at the ''table d'hôte'', i.e. a Prussian baron and some Austrian with their wives, I was horrified. I asked if I could dine at a special table? It turned out that I could. Encouraged by this, I asked if I could dine ''with [[~~Alosha~~]]''? They agreed to this too, but on condition that we would have dinner and lunch not in the large dining room, but nearby. Today at 9 o'clock, instead of dinner, which we declined, we were given supper in this side room. I'm very glad to be rid of the Prussian baron. The supper was very decent. After supper we went out for a walk. We drank coffee in ''our'' place, went for a ''stroll along our'' street, in the direction of the Grand Hôtel. This was both ''bitter and sweet'' for me. [[Tolichka]]! How can I tell you how much I love you. But I'm unlikely to be able to stay here for long. It is too ''painful''! I received a letter from Madame ''Mayor'', an exceptionally sweet one. She sadly reports that besides some convalescing German women, ''there is no one''. I don't think I'll be able to bear a month here, and shall go there, although it will be ''bitter and sweet'' there too! I hope to sleep well today due to the drinking. Алёшу будить не хочется, и поэтому пишу карандашом, который попался под руку.

	Я очень недоволен отелем. Когда я вошёл в комнаты, то они оказались приготовленными только в том смысле, что печки были страшно натоплены. Мебели ужасно мало, очень тесно и стол для писания маленький и шатающийся. Помнишь ли, что было сговорено, что Алёша будет обедать с ''Direttore'' и что при этом им будет даваться вино. Сегодня этого не сделали, и когда я спросил почему, то сказали, что надо платить особенно. Положим, Алёша вина не любит, но всё-таки скверно. В 6 часов, когда стало совсем темно, я потребовал согласно уговору лампу (помнишь, она была в счёту). Девка возвратилась, сказав, что надо платить особо. Я сделал страшную сцену, кричал, позвал ''Direttore'' и, будучи очень нервен, чуть не приколотил его. Результатом вышло то, что завтра лампа будет. У знав, что за ''table d'hot'ом'' обедают всего четыре человека, т. е. прусский барон с женой и какой-то австриец с женой, я ужаснулся. Я спросил, нельзя ли мне обедать за особым столом? оказалось, что можно. Поощрённый этим я спросил, нельзя ли мне обедать ''с Алёшей''?
