Сейчас расстались с Модестом. День прошёл следующим образом. Утром я водил Модю и Колю по городу и показал им все самое главное. После завтрака три моих сожителя отправились на большую прогулку, а я засел за письма и написал их шесть: к тебе, к Н[адежде] Ф[иларетовне], к Рубинштейну, к Юргенсону, к Котеку, к Талю в Париж. После обеда ходили с Модей гулять при чудном лунном освещении. В девять часов воротились и присутствовали при куше Коли. Остальное время провели, сидя в нашем салоне, болтая, перечитывая письма и читая. Модест с Колей составляют пару людей очень интересную и симпатичную. Трудно мне выразить, как я люблю Колю. Какое счастье иметь около себя такого ребёнка! Как приятно его ласкать и лелеять.

Получил письмо от Котека, в котором он сообщает, что решился остаться в Берлине и поступить в школу Иоахима. Что касается денег, то он решился написать M[ada]me Мекк и просить высылать ему 100 р[ублей], которые она назначила его сёстрам, так как им теперь не нужно: одна больна, другая неспособна к музыке. Он очень боится, что я рассержусь. Я его успокоил. Судя по некоторым намёкам Н[адежды] Ф[иларетовны] на ''музыкантов, родившихся от музыкантов'', я имею основание думать, что она неохотно согласится на его просьбу, а впрочем, Бог знает. На мою просьбу написать мне её мнение о Котике, — она мне ничего не отвечала.

Я забыл тебе сказать, что мне чрезвычайно жалко ''рояля'', который я в пылу излишней щедрости предложил Антонине Ивановне. Я ведь тогда не знал, что мне придётся уплатить ей две тысячи. Знай я это, я бы ни за что не отдал милого инструмента, тем более, что отнимать его теперь от Переслени очень не хочется. Нельзя ли отвильнуть? Впрочем, чёрт с ней. Пускай берет, лишь бы исчезла с глаз моих навеки. Извини, голубчик мой.

Я продолжаю немножко ''будировать'' на Сан-Ремо. Не могу простить ему первых ужасно грустно проведённых дней.

Ну как не ''будировать'' на Сан-Ремо. Сегодня пошли после завтрака гулять в горы. Сначала все шло очень хорошо. Места были все красивые, хотя все закрытые. Взобравшись среди лимонных и апельсинных плантаций куда-то довольно высоко, сели отдыхать, а Алёша и Коля взлезли на дерево. Не прошло и 2 минут, как явился какой-то старый мужик и осыпал их и нас всякими ругательствами. Я было начал кричать на него; тогда он в бешенстве подскочил ко мне с очевидным намерением вытолкать меня и ругая меня самым бесцеремонным образом. Что было делать? Пришлось ретироваться, но я долго не мог успокоиться и до сих пор не могу без омерзения думать об этой сцене.

За обедом между Колей и Модестом была ужасная сцена, слезы, крики, плач, потом наказанье, т. е. изгнание Коли из столовой наверх и лишение двух кушаний. Затем примиренье. Все это было и трогательно, и в то же время забавно. Какой в сущности, чудный ребёнок Коля, но нужно отдать справедливость и Модесту. Он превосходно и с величайшим умом и тактом исполняет свои обязанности.

Я начал сегодня инструментовку 3-го акта оперы. В общем мне хорошо, тепло, отрадно, только Сан-Ремо продолжает не нравиться. Вчера в одной книге я вычитал следующее: «людям полнокровным и с сильно возбуждёнными нервами климат и местность Лигурийского побережья не подходит; они тяготятся этой ослепительной пестротой и роскошью природы». Вот, вероятно, и объяснение, почему я не наслаждался ни в Риме, ни в Венеции, ни здесь. Теперь сидим с Модей и при освещении тусклой лампы пишем: он задачи для Коли, — я письмо к тебе до завтраго, Толичка мой. Получил милое письмо от Кондратьева.

Очень устал, писать сегодня не буду. Впрочем, ничего особенного не было. Совершили большую прогулку в горы. Хорошего мало. Красивых видов нет. Все закрыто деревьями. Дороги ужасные. Читаю «Александра I» Соловьёва. Хорошо.

Я с каждым днём все больше и больше влюбляюсь в Колю. Ты его не знаешь так хорошо, как я, потому что тебе не приходилось с ним жить. Я не знаю ни одного ребёнка с более приятным нравом, более нежного, мягкого. Ум его замечателен, но самая поразительная из его способностей: это память сегодня за обедом он меня положительно изумил своим знанием истории. Он лучше меня знает (а ведь это моя специальность!), какой царь от кого родился, на ком женат был, сколько имел детей, как их звали и т. д. Сцены его с Модестом всегда дают ему случай выказать его необычайную доброту, его привязанность к Модесту, желание угодить ему всячески. Он очень полюбил Алёшу и целый день с ним возится и играет. Со мной он очень нежен и мил. Моя партитура его ужасно интересует. Он беспрестанно является в мою комнату, расспрашивает, зачем и как. Я стал его понимать и говорю с ним свободно.

День сегодня прошёл обычным порядком. Гуляли по берегу моря. Модесту и Коле Сан-Ремо очень нравится. Я продолжаю дуться, и кажется, что никогда не примирюсь с этой скучной местностью. Каждый день во время прогулки мы встречаем Ольгу Николаевну, королеву Виртембергскую, и отвешиваем ей низкие поклоны. Очень симпатичное, красивое лицо, но худое, бледное.

Вообще же, при тех условиях, в которых я теперь нахожусь, я очень легко проживу здесь месяца три, но к весне меня неудержимо потянет в Россию, и я мечтаю об этом, как о самом сладком сновидении. Увы! как только от общей мысли о России я перехожу в частности к Каменке, наступает охлаждение. Тяжело и неловко мне там будет, особенно без тебя и Модеста. Впрочем, до этого далеко ещё! Ближайшие планы следующие: недели через три отправиться по ''корнише'' (шоссе в Ниццу) до Ниццы, оттуда в Лион и Париж, где Модесту нужно быть, а потом в лоно семейства Майоров. Насколько я ненавижу Венецию, Рим, Сан-Ремо, — настолько я сохранил самое тёплое воспоминание о ''Villa Richelieu''. Два дня прошло без писем. Я пишу круглым числом около 3-х писем в день. Почему не получаю столько же?

All the places were beautiful, although everywhere was closed. Having climbed somewhere rather high, amongst the lemon and orange plantations, we sat down to rest, and [[Alyosha]] and [[Nikolay Konradi\|Kolya]] climbed a tree. Not even 2 minutes had passed, when some old man appeared and showered both them and us with all sorts of curses. I began shouting at him; then he rushed up to me in a rage with the obvious intention of throwing me out, and cursing me in the most unceremonious manner. What was to be done? I was obliged to retreat, but I couldn't calm myself down for ages, and I still can't think about this scene without horror.		Well, how not to ''cause a stir'' in [[San Remo]].
