Finally at 5 o'clock we arrived in [[Nice]], on the 8th floor no less of the ''Hôtel de la Paix''. We decided to go for a little stroll. We had dinner at the ''table d'hôte'', then [[Alyosha]] and I took baths, superbly arranged right there in the hotel. After putting [[Kolya]] to bed, [[Modya]] went to the theatre and returned early. Тут-то и началась самая прелесть. Дорога идёт по краю высочайших скал, виды на каждом шагу меняются, солнце греет и ярко светит, местами мы взбираемся так высоко, что приходится ехать среди снега. Наконец в 5 часов приехали в Ниццу и остановились на каком-то 8-ом этаже ''Hôtel de la Paix''. У спели немножко погулять. Обедали в ''table d'hôte'', потом я с Алёшей брали ванны, превосходно устроенные тут же в отеле. Модя, уложивши Колю, ходил в театр и вернулся рано. Сегодня в 8½ часов мы сели в весьма удобную коляску и отправились по необычайно живописной дороге по направлению Ниццы. В Ментону мы приехали в 12 часов, завтракали и гуляли. В 2 отправились дальше. Тут-то и началась самая прелесть. Дорога идёт по краю высочайших скал, виды на каждом шагу меняются, солнце греет и ярко светит, местами мы взбираемся так высоко, что приходится ехать среди снега. Наконец в 5 часов приехали в Ниццу и остановились на каком-то 8-ом этаже ''Hôtel de la Paix''. У спели немножко погулять. Обедали в ''table d'hôte'', потом я с Алёшей брали ванны, превосходно устроенные тут же в отеле. Модя, уложивши Колю, ходил в театр и вернулся рано.

Спал очень хорошо. После кофе мы с Модестом и с Колей снимались по просьбе Н[адежды] Ф[иларетовны]. Кстати, пришли мне сейчас же в 1-ом письме свою карточку, — я обещал послать её Н[адежде] Ф[иларетовне]. Не позабудь сделать это, голубчик мой. После завтрака ездили осматривать все, что в Ницце наиболее красиво и замечательно. В 4 часа я с Колей ходил в зверинец смотреть ''укротительницу''. Теперь только что кончился обед. Хочу пойти в театр. До свиданья. Был в театре. M[ademois]elle Кушник пела «''Аngоt''».

Утром сделали чудеснейшую прогулку в ''Château''; ты, может, помнишь это место? С него дивный и огромный вид на Ниццу с окрестностями. Погода была совсем майская. После завтрака выехали в 2 часа с ½, а в 7 часов прибыли в Сан-Ремо. Как мне показалось противно Сан-Ремо после красивой, весёлой Ниццы. Как здесь, в сущности, скучно. Гулять совершенно негде, кроме берега моря. В горы куда ни придёшь, все одно и то же. Все те же бесконечные оливковые деревья, застилающие вид, и с бабами, стариками и мальчишками, собирающими под ними оливки.

Нашёл множество писем и в том числе твоё маленькое. Я все забываю тебе сказать, чтоб ты поцеловал от меня Леву, Сашу, Таню, Анну. Когда они уезжают назад? Я им не пишу в Петербург, ибо ты сообщишь все, что нужно. Целую тебя.

Толичка! В наказание тебе за коротенькое последнее письмо и я сегодня напишу тебе только один листик. Сегодняшний день ознаменовался страшной руготней, которой удостаивается от меня ежеминутно Сан-Ремо. Препаршивое и предрянное, в сущности, местечко. После Ниццы оно мне кажется просто непозволительно жалко. Гулять решительно нег де. Нельзя же вечно ходить по набережной. Как только пойдёшь в горы, начинаются бесконечные, скучные, однообразные оливковые рощи, маскирующие все виды и сами по себе очень уродливые. Зато сегодня насчёт Алёши я имею основание сильно радоваться. Доктор сказал, что через неделю он будет вполне здоров. Если это правда, то нужно отдать справедливость доктору: он очень энергично, умно вёл леченье. Не забудь написать, сколько времени ''Лева с Сашей'' пробудут в Петербурге. Целую тебя, Папу, Л[изавету] М[ихаиловну], Леву, Сашу, Таню, Анну.
