I was very anxious last week. Here's what happened. Leaving Venice, I asked the hotel manager to pack these manuscripts and, immediately after my departure that same day, to send them to the post office. I had reason to trust this gentleman. Having received your letters last week, and learning that you still hadn't received the translations, I immediately telegraphed him asking whether the manuscript had been sent off, and, if yes, to instruct him to send me the postal receipt. I had left him enough money, and knew that the lack of it could not serve as an impediment to him. The very next day I received an answer from him that the matter had been delayed, because the post office had demanded a deposit of 50 francs???? Anyway, he sent the package all the same — not by post, but through some bureau. At the same time he sent me two receipts, neither of which I understand at all. One bears the date 2nd January, but the other has the 29th. I'm sending you these two receipts, and in conclusion I beg your forgiveness for the botch up.

Peter Comploier.

I repeat that I don't need any money for the translations, for the symphony, or these pieces. Instead I ask you instead for the following 3 services:

1) To pay Taneyev royally for the piano reduction of the symphony.

2) To accept my opera and to print it on condition that I'll only receive a fee for it in the event that it goes on the grand stage (which is very doubtful, because I've decided to only give it the Imperial Theatre only if they beg for it, and I myself am not at all bothered), and

3) 200 rubles, which I will eventually pay back in either money or work, so that you can provide me with credit in case of need, as you've done before, for amounts not exceeding 100 rubles.

I won't go to Paris, even if they offered me millions. I don't want to. Henceforth, I will only do what I want to do. I spit on them all!
Yours P. Tchaikovsky
I forgot to put the receipts in the letter. Here they are. Note that in one of them I'm called Peter Comploier.
