After dinner we went to ''Rigi Vaudois''. Lord, how every turn of this road reminded me of you! If I were alone, I should have immediately lapsed into melancholy. Fortunately, in such a large and pleasant company, the walk wasn't spoiled by the memory of you, but rather it added a particular charm. Speaking of company: I can't imagine how I'll endure parting ways from ''[[Nikolay Konradi\|Kolya]]''. My love for him grows by the day, by the hour. 	Замечательный факт этого дня был приезд Котика, который явился в 2½ часа и был встречен на железной дороге нами всеми. Он потолстел и отрастил бороду. {{...}} весьма радовался свиданию с ним. Кормили его обедом и водили гулять. За ужином он конфузился, так как разговор весь шёл по-французски. Я привёл в большое смущение наших дам, спросив их, почему, будучи русскими, они не хотят говорить с нами по-русски. Обе ужасно покраснели и начали пороть какой-то вздор. Мы тщетно ломаем себе голову, чтобы узнать, что они и кто они? По выговору некоторых русских слов можно предположить, что они немки, а между тем они это отрицают. Изящный старый француз, который гостит у них, окончательно сбивает меня с толку. А впрочем, черт с ними. Мне нравится то, что они очарованы Колей и ухаживают за ним всячески. Холод ужасный, и снег валит толстыми хлопьями. В наших комнатах постоянно топятся печи, и это сообщает им очень уютный характер. 			I slept well. We walked. I worked again without enthusiasm, forcing myself. I have no idea why, and I can't understand why, despite so many favourable conditions, I'm not ''disposed'' to work. Am I worn out? I have to squeeze out insipid and mundane little ideas from myself, and pore over every bar. But I shall press on, and hope that inspiration will strike again. At dinner I thought of you. There was bouillon with horseradish. We are fed just as deliciously as when you were there. I'm so fed up of the company of our mysterious ladies! We have to keep speaking French the whole time. Fortunately, their ''gentilhomme'' guest is quite an interesting and worldly person. We went for a walk to the ''Châtelet'' and to ''Crêtes''. ''You'' were there again at every step. After the stroll, I received two charming letters: one from [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]], the other from you. I simply devoured your letter, it was so interesting! You won't believe how much I love this type of letter. Опять неистовый холод. После утренней прогулки я до обеда писал. Я работаю над сонатой для ф[орте]п[ьяно]. (Не говори об этом.) Работал неудачно, неуспешно. После обеда ходили на ''Rigi Vaudois''. Господи, как мне каждый уголок этой дороги живо напоминал тебя! Будь я один, я бы тотчас впал в меланхолию. К счастью, в таком большом и приятном обществе воспоминание о тебе не отравляло, а сообщало особенную прелесть прогулке. Кстати об обществе. Я не могу себе представить, как я перенесу разлуку с ''Колей''. С каждым днём, с каждым часом моя любовь к нему усиливается. Никогда я не любил так глубоко и нежно ни одного ребёнка.

На возвратном пути мы испытали очень неприятные минуты. Вздумали возвращаться не по большой дороге, а по какой-то тропинке, очень крутой, и попали в такое место, что ни вперёд, ни назад. Я боялся главнейшим образом за Колю. Одна минута была ужасная. Я упал и начал катиться по склизкому склону, грозившему падением с большой высоты, а Колю держал за руку. Кое-как удержался, но потрясенье было очень сильное.

Вечером до ужина и после ужина музицировали. Котик навёз много нот, и ожидается ещё целая масса четырёхручных аранжировок из Берлина. Мне очень понравилась ''Symphonie espagnole Lalo''. После чая играли мою 4-ую симфонию, которую Модя ещё никогда не слыхал.

	It's bitterly cold again. After my morning stroll, I wrote until dinner. I'm working on a sonata for piano. (Don't mention this.) I worked poorly and unsuccessfully. After dinner we went to ''Rigi Vaudois''. Lord, how every turn of this road reminded me of you! If I were alone, I should have immediately lapsed into melancholy. Fortunately, in such a large and pleasant company, the walk wasn't spoiled by the memory of you, but rather it added a particular charm. Speaking of company: I can't imagine how I'll endure parting ways from ''[[Nikolay Konradi\|Kolya]]''. My love for him grows by the day, by the hour.
