I went to Petersburg and spent two very pleasant weeks there, despite the fact that I had arrived there on the day that poor Katya died. Meeting with everyone close to my heart was exceptionally pleasant; I'm continually visiting your lot, they were as amazingly kind as always. Poor Vera is awfully upset that she can't go to Kamenka, and I'm even afraid that this summer will have a bad effect on her already poor health; whenever it's necessary to talk about the dacha and Kamenka, she is on the verge of tears every time, and sometimes she simply weeps. Wouldn't it be possible to arrange a trip for her? Incidentally, I'll be pleading for two more creatures who are just mad about Kamenka. You wrote to Vera that Tolya and Modya could be left behind in Petersburg, but she and I have agreed not to tell them about such a decision yet; they (especially Tolya) would be utterly dejected. One of the reasons why they should like to spend this summer in Kamenka is that I'll be there, and this is now the sole place where we can live together. If you only knew how sincerely fond these two gentlemen are of me (for which, however, I repay them a hundredfold), then you would be so sorry for keeping us apart. And so, dear friends, if there is the slightest opportunity, please do arrange this trip. It may very well be that I'll be in a position to take on some of the costs myself. (Modest, who doesn't love Kamenka quite as passionately, might agree to stay in Petersburg, if it was suggested to him.)

I feel at fault before you for writing too rarely, but please forgive me. The opera didn't actually happen, because as soon as the Poles appeared, the whole theatre cried "Off with the Poles", etc. In the last scene of the 4th act, when the Poles ought to kill Susanin, the actor performing the role began to fight with the Polish chorus, and, being very strong, he knocked a lot of them down, and the rest — seeing that the audience approved of such a mockery of art, of truth, of decency — fell over, and the triumphant Susanin was left unscathed, waving his arms menacingly to the Muscovites' deafening applause.

All of Moscow is now in terribly agitated due to the the attempt on the sovereign's life; the ovations here are unimaginable; you'll read what's been happening in the "Moscow Register", for example, the third day at the Bolshoi Theatre (at "A Life for the Tsar"), where I was present.
