	The son of the deacon of Saint Sofia's Church in [[Moscow]], he studied singing at the [[Moscow]] Conservatory from 1884 to 1890, where he was a grant-aided student nominated by Tchaikovsky. In 1890 he made his debut in [[Milan]], and regularly appeared on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in [[Saint Petersburg]] (1892–1895) and the Bolshoi Theatre in [[Moscow]] (1895–1908), as well as with the Italian Opera company.
