Astrakhan (Астрахань) is a major city on the Volga River in southern European Russia, and the administrative centre of Astrakhan Oblast (Астраханская область).

In Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Astrakhan district (Астраханский уезд) in the Astrakhan province (Астраханская губерния) of the Russian Empire.
