Dear friend! You are misguided to think that Klimentova would have supplied her portrait in response to any entreaties from me. This happened on her own initiative. I would ask you to hold onto this portrait for the time being, or if possible, to give the same to S. A. Bernard, who is due to send me all the performers from "Onegin" shortly. I don't think it should be an inconvenience to add Klimentova to the group. With regard to this portrait, I must appeal to you with another request. Golubchik, kindly send off to Dyagovchenko for a dozen of my small picture cards, provided the negatives have been kept, and either let him deliver them here and I will send the money, or alternatively, if you would be so kind, to pay and take delivery yourself. (Incidentally! Please do not forget at the first opportunity to send me an account for the amount to be deducted from your capital). I need these cards to send to the various performers from "Onegin", to whom I have promised them, and in particular to Klimentova, who was very insistent. I swear that I won't bother you any more instructions. I was a little taken aback by Mrs Klimentova's inscription. From my conversations with her I had occasion to conclude that the she was a highly opinionated and at the sam time narrow-minded young lady. The Lord be with her.

I'm very well settled in here. All my books and portraits have come, the table is decorated is it used to be in Moscow, and if my dog Bishka were sitting beside me in the room, I could sometimes imagine myself to be in Moscow. I'm working very assiduously. I want to divest myself of this unfortunate and utterly troublesome suite as quickly as possible. Within three days it should all be finished, and I cherish the sweet hope that next season it will be performed from the printed notes. Either I'm very much mistaken, or this will be a successful thing that will take hold very rapidly. It has very modest and uncomplicated instrumentation.

The weather is magnificent here. Everything would be fine, were it not for worrying about my sister, who has recently been really quite unwell. Yesterday she left for Kiev on family business, and today I received a dispatch to say that she's taken ill there. My brother-in-law is travelling there, and everyone here is terribly concerned. Goodbye, old chap. Sorry for the eternal tribulations.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

I was fascinated by the story of your visit from Korsakov. Up until now I had thought better of him.
