Notes and References

  1. Having decided to abandon his teaching post at the Moscow Conservatory once and for all and to go abroad later that year (but first spending the rest of October in Saint Petersburg), Tchaikovsky gave a farewell dinner on the day of this letter. Apart from Taneyev (who wrote "Received on 7 October 1878 [O.S.], Saturday" on this invitation, thus allowing it to be dated precisely), also present at this dinner were Nikolay Rubinstein, Karl Albrecht, Pyotr Jurgenson, and Nikolay Kashkin. Tchaikovsky set off for Saint Petersburg that very evening — note based on information in Дни и годы П. И. Чайковского. Летопись жизни и творчества (1940), p. 190, and in Vladimir Zhdanov's note in П. И. Чайковский. С. И. Танеев. Письма (1951), p. 40.
