Голубушка Баташа! Для Зверева мне необходимо иметь на воскресенье бутылку самого лучшего портвейну и для всех ''нас'' несколько фунтов самой лучшей ''икры свежей''; я думаю фунтов 5 или, по меньшей мере, четыре. Да ещё какой-нибудь хорошей закуски, например сёмги и швейцарского сыру. Для ''Тонечки'' нужно хорошего красного вина бутылки 3 или 4. Все это, душечка моя, Вы потрудитесь купить и привезти мне. Если у Вас денег нет, то возьмите у Юргенсона, а я с Вами расплачусь здесь.
 
Пожалуйста, ангелочек, сделайте все это, как следует.
 
Скажите Вашему Тоне, что я очень, очень рад буду, если он приедет ко мне раньше, хотя бы в четверг или пятницу. Работе моей он не помешает, да я и не работаю теперь, а просто хандрю. Причиной хандры — отвращение к предстоящему путешествию на Кавказ и т. д. Совсем старичком я стал. Я не только не боюсь теперь такого гостя, как Тоня, а напротив, жажду общества и тягощусь своим одиночеством.
