Meine liebe Gnädigste!

Ich küsse Ihre Hände!

Dear friend Misha!
Finally, after three months of meanderings, I returned home last night. Among the 30 (!!!) letters awaiting me here, I found yours. If you will not mind, golubchik, this time I shall confine myself to just a few words, because I must write so many replies right away, and I don't have the energy for a heartfelt chat.

I already knew about your move to Moscow . Naturally I'm delighted that I'll be seeing you and Varvara Mikhaylovna more often, but... what say you? I still feel rather sorry for you and her. You lived so splendidly and freely in my dear Tiflis!!!

But let's see, perhaps it will turn out all the better!! In any case, as I said, it's nice to know that you are close at hand; yes, you cannot but rejoice that you'll no longer be so isolated, and will feel part of the community of music and musicians.

I've written a new symphony and a new piano concerto in rough . Tomorrow I shall set about the instrumentation.

How about Safonov! Procuring 400 thousand from the Tsar!!! One cannot but admire this aspect of his job. And how young he still is for an administrator.
I kiss your hands!

I kiss Varvara Mikhailovna's hands, hug you, kiss Tanya and bow to Anna Mikhaylovna.
P.S. Please write to me as soon as possible which piano concerto you intend to play in Petersburg??? It has been settled that Vasily will be playing the Liszt E-flat major. But what about you, my dearest madam?? The Petersburg directorship is very happy that you will be coming.

My dear madam!

I have received your esteemed letter and have carried out your order. Francesco Berger asks me whether I would be satisfied if you were to play, under my leadership, the Gypsy Fantasy [3] in the concert where I shall be conducting my new symphony (in London, May 1894) [4]. I answered that I would be both exceedingly pleased and flattered if I were to receive this honour [5]. Do I have your consent? Or would you prefer to play my Fantasia, or perhaps both? In any case, I am very happy to be with you in London soon. Whether or not I will be coming to Itter presently I cannot say. I have to work for the time being and then we shall see. Tell Vasily that the piano concerto [6] is already finished in sketched form and that I hope it will not turn out to be bad or ungrateful! [...]

I kiss your hands!

P.S. Please write to me as soon as possible which piano concerto you intend to play in Petersburg??? It has been settled that Vasily will be playing the Liszt E-flat major. But what about you, my dearest madam?? The Petersburg directorship is very happy that you will be coming.
