8 March 1893

Most respected Stepan Vasilyevich!

I am returning herewith the notebook containing the contrapuntal works by A. Petrov, which I have looked through with great pleasure. Praise and honour to you and Vasily Sergeyevich! Yesterday's visit to you left me with a most gratifying impression![1]

Until we see each other soon!

Sincerely devoted and respectful,

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. The previous day Tchaikovsky had visited the Synodal School where he listened to a concert by the school orchestra. These may have included a work by "A. Petrov", who seems to have been a student whose compositions were written in the notebook that Tchaikovsky took away to study. Nothing more is known about A. Petrov.
